EXPERIMENT NO. 1: SEPARATING MIXTURES

I. Problem: How are substances separated?

II. Hypothesis
Each mixture can be separated if it’s done correctly and to know how to remove unwanted
particles, to obtain important substances and to obtain pure substances.

III. Materials
needles porous cloth 2 containers
thumb tacks casserole isopropyl alcohol
sand insulated glove/mitten/rug paper towel
salt spoon masking/scotch tape
water (tap and hot) small plate pencil
magnet small containers/bowls scissors
rubber bands colored candies marker
heat source

IV. Procedure
Set-up A
1. Mix at least 5 needles, thumb tacks and a small amount of sand in a small container/bowl.
Move the bar magnet around the mixture. Observe if there are particles attracted to
magnet. Place the attracted materials in another container/bowl. Repeat the procedure
until all the components are separated.
Set-up B
1. Prepare one pack of colored candies and separate it based on its sizes and colors.
Set-up C
1. Prepare 200 ml of hot water in a container. Pour in a sand and stir for two minutes. Let
the mixture settle for at least 1 minute.
2. Set up a porous cloth on top of a container. Carefully pour out the liquid composition of
the mixture in the funnel and into the drain container. Drain the water thoroughly,
leaving behind the wet sand in the porous cloth.
Set-up D
1. Mix 200 ml water and salt in a small casserole to make a salt solution. Heat the salt
solution in the casserole until all the water evaporated. Gather the salt precipitates.
(Note: Please ask for assistance in preparing this set-up because it involves the use of
heat source.)

Set-up E
1. Cut a small strip of paper towel and draw a line/make a dot at the bottom part of the
paper using a marker. Attach one end of the strip of paper towel on a pencil and place it
on the beaker. Let one end of the strip of paper hanging and touching the isopropyl
alcohol. Observe what happens.

V. Results and Observations:

A. Observation Table:
Set-Up Mixture Component/s Classification of Separation Results
(materials used) Mixture Technique

A Sand, needles, thumb Heterogenous Physical Metals are attracted

tacks, magnet Separation to magnets, that can
be easily removed
even if it mixes with
something else.
B colored candies Heterogenous Physical Candies are easily
Separation separated due to
their different size
and shapes.
C Hot water, Sand, Porous Homogenous Physical The water got
cloths, rubber ban, Separation separated from the
container, spoon sand because of the
porous cloths and
the water got
filtered.
D Water, salt, casserole, Homogenous Chemical The water got
spoon, and a heat source. Separation evaporated due heat
source and the salt
inside the water
became salt again
because the water
got evaporated.

E Pencil, beaker, paper Homogenous Chemical Due to the alcohol

towels, marker, and Separation mixing with the ink
alcohol of the marker cause
the paper towel
became a color
purple, then the ink
slowly moving up
into the paper towel
till at pencil.

B. Guide Questions:
1. What is the advantage of using magnet in separating the mixtures in set-up A?
The advantage of using magnets in separating the mixtures in set up A it is easily to
separate the metals to non-metals, instead of using hands to separate the non-metal
particles, we can use magnets to easily get and separate the non-metal particles.

2. Why is it easier to separate the components used in set-up B?

Because due to the candies size and colors it is easier to spot the difference to
separate it.

3. Why is the sand left on top of the porous cloth?

Because the water is a liquid that can easily to the tiny holes of the porous cloths, and
because sand particles are larger and the pore spaces between the particles of the
porous cloths.

4. What happened to the water after it is heated?

When water gets heated it starts to boil and there are atoms inside which vibrate and
makes the water boil, and it will evaporate.

5. Why do some colors travel farther on the filter paper than other colors?
Several factors play a role in determining the distance that the colors rise depends on
the size of the pigment molecule; which pigments are more soluble in the denatured
alcohol; and the level of attraction that the pigment has to the chromatography paper.

VI. Conclusions:
My conclusion to all the results of my experiment, I’ve we learned that because of
the different physical and chemical properties of mixtures, it is possible for us to separate a
solution into its original components we used chemical and physical means to partially and
just separate components.
VII. Application / Valuing:
Why do you need to know how to separate the mixtures?
We need to know how to separate mixture, because due to the harmful components of
some things or to remove unwanted particles, to obtain important substances and to obtain
pure substances.
