STRUCTURE AND OPERATION 34B
1. Air Suspension

• Air spring, leaf spring assembly, cross beam, and shock absorber are installed between frame and rear axle or
between frame and rear 1st axle as well as rear 2nd axle to support the vehicle body mass and absorb the vibra-
tion and shock from the road surface to prevent them from being directly transmitted to the vehicle body, thus pro-
tecting the vehicle body, occupants, and cargos. This construction also restricts irregular vibration of the wheels to
ensure driving stability. The air spring is characterized by softer spring. Therefore, lateral rod is installed to reduce
rolling which is larger in a softer suspension.
• Leveling valve is fitted on the rear axle housing. The leveling valve senses the increase and decrease of loads
and controls the internal pressure of the air spring depending upon the load.

34B-3
STRUCTURE AND OPERATION
2. Air Suspension System

• The standard vehicle height control is performed by the leveling valve.

• To lower the vehicle height, set the height control switch to DOWN position. The 3-way magnetic valve closes the
air supply passage from the leveling valve to the air springs and at the same time discharges the air in the air
springs, thus the vehicle height lowers. For the above operation, the following conditions must be satisfied.
• The hand control valve is in parking position.
• The transmission is in neutral.

34B-4
34B
3. Leveling Valve

• The leveling valve is a control device which supplies or discharges compressed air to or from the air spring ac-
cording to loads. The leveling valve body is mounted on the frame.

34B-5
STRUCTURE AND OPERATION
3.1 When load decreased
• The lever of the leveling valve is lowered below the neutral posi-
tion. When the lever moves down beyond the dead zone, ex-
haust valve is opened. Since intake valve remains closed,
therefore, the air from discharge port A flows through the
opened exhaust valve and is discharged into the atmosphere
from exhaust port B.

3.2 When load increased

• The lever of the leveling valve is raised above the neutral posi-
tion. When the lever moves up beyond the dead zone, intake
valve is opened. Since exhaust valve remains closed, therefore,
the air flows from supply port C to discharge port A.

ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION AND ADJUSTMENT
1. Adjustment of Air Spring Height

Tightening torque (Unit: N·m {kgf·m})

Location Parts to be tightened Tightening torque Remarks
– Lock nut 12 to 15 {1.2 to 1.6} –

CAUTION
• Adjust air spring with no occupant in the vehicle.

• Set air pressure in the air tank to the specified value.

• To prevent dead zone (play) of levelling valve from affecting ad-
justment, loosen lock nut of rod first, then turn turn buckle to
shorten rod length A (distance between centers of eye sections
at rod end). Then gradually extend the distance.
• Measure height of air spring using standard scale. When height
B is the following value, tighten lock nut of rod. <FP-R>
B: 344 mm

• Measure the height of air spring of rear 2nd axle using standard
scale. When height B is the following value, tighten lock nut of
rod. <FV>
B: 296 mm

Installation procedure
Installation: Diaphragm
• Install diaphragm nut such that the projection length A of dia-
phragm (stem) meets the standard value when the specified air
pressure of 590 kPa {6 kgf/cm2} is applied to the inlet side.

Adjustment: Dead zone at the lever end

• Adjust dead zone A (lever end hole moving range where no air
flow in nor out the valve) for the standard value, using adjuster.
