CHAPTER IV

FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

This study aims to find the coherences between visual features and verbal

features in an Indonesian ELT textbook for senior high school called “Bahasa

Inggris for X grade”. This analysis, examined how representational meanings

depicted visually and verbally in an Indonesian ELT textbook for secondary

education level. In this section reported the findings of analysis in the form of

visual features and verbal features reflect on the relationship between both of the

features.

1. Coherences representational meanings between visual feature and verbal

feature.

The first chapter of this book will discuss about “talking about self”. The

section mainly describe about identity and self-introduction. It was portrayed by


the picture of a girl who holds the books and brings a bag, she wears a blue veil,

white long shirt and a long blue skirt which can be interpreted that she is a

Muslim student just like what M Kang, M Sklar, and KKP Johnson (2011) argued

“Dress can play a role in communicating both a social identity (e.g. wearing a

team shirt) and a personal identity (e.g. wearing a team shirt with a unique

accessory)”. The picture is classified as speech and mental process because of the

existent of dialogue balloons which says “I’m khansa”. It is a special kind of

vector that can be observed in comic strips: by the existent of the thought balloons

and dialogue balloons that connect drawings of speakers or thinkers to their

speech or thought (Kress & Van Leeuwen, 2006). There is one represented

participant using uniform while holding a few book in her arm and introducing

herself to the audience and form a vector by dialogue balloon said “I’m khansa”

which create speech and mental processes in the picture.

Therefore after analyzing both visual and verbal text above, it can be

concluded that there is coherence between both of them since they share the same

processes. There are two processes identified in written text analysis namely

relational and verbal processes. However the relational process here is refer to the

picture as her identity while the second one is verbal process is similar to the

classification of figure 3.1 that identified as speech and mental process. Since in

term of visual social semiotic speech and mental process is equal to verbal process

in transitivity.
