EXPT. NO.8

Phase voltage and line voltage measurement of a three phase Y- connected

load and Two-wattmeter method of measuring power
OBJECTIVES

1. Familiarization with three phase load system

2. Comparison of the three phase line voltage with the phase voltage
3. Measuring Power of a balanced load using two-wattmeter method

PART A: Phase voltage and line voltage measurement

CAUTION:
1. Don’t switch on the supply until the circuit has been checked by your teacher.
2. Take care of the connection of the wattmeter. Don’t connect ammeter coil in
parallel or voltmeter coil in series. Take care of the capacitor in energized
condition. It must have initial voltage=0. An energized capacitor with high
voltage may cause voltage shock

REPORT

1. Compare the Line to line voltage and line to neutral voltage.

2. Relate it with the theoretical value.
3. Discuss the results obtained in three tables

PART B: Two-Wattmeter Method

PROCEDURE

Two-Wattmeter method is applicable for both three-phase balanced and three-phase

unbalanced system. We can describe the basic problem in terms of the circuit shown in
Fig.8.2, where the two wattmeters are indicated by W1 and W2. The current coils (cc) are
connected in series and potential coils (pc) are connected in parallel.

1. Connect the cc and pc as shown in Fig. 8.2. The connection diagram is shown in Fig.
8.3.
2. Record the readings of two wattmeters in table 8.4
3. Measure power of each phase by a wattmeter following the procedure outlined in the
expt. 8 by voltmeter and line current by ammeter
4. Repeat steps 2, 3 for a different combination of lamp and capacitance.

REPORT

1. Determine total power measured by two-wattmeter method. Compare power

measured by this method with the total power measured by three wattmeters.
2. If you find any difference between these two methods, explain why you have
obtained different values
