Subject-Statement of Purpose

Respected Sir/Madam

I am grateful to Edith Cowan University (ECU) for providing me this opportunity

and it is with my sincere sense of gratification that I put my brief statement of

purpose. It is my unfathomable chance to become a family member of this huge,

innovative and world class educational provider. My sole motive of writing this

application is to acquire student visa on the incentives that stimulate me to pursue

further studying in Australia and reflect the motives of my choice for ECU as well

as to state my future career objectives.

Introduction

Take a limitation and turn it into an opportunity. Take an opportunity and turn it

into an adventure by dreaming big.

I, Prowjol Simkhada, am an enthusiastic person aspiring to build a career in hotel

management. I was born on January 27, 2002. I am a permanent resident of

Kathmandu, Nepal. I have my ambitions in life which thrives me to become a

1
better person every day. I believe in taking a limitation and turning it into an

opportunity; taking an opportunity and turning it into adventure, dreaming big. I

am a very hardworking and energetic individual and have always found myself

dedicated towards what I do. I am a passionate and productive individual. I believe

that deeds of generosity and result-oriented efforts can bring satisfaction to me as

well as benefit to my society.

Family Background

I have always received unconditional support and immense love from my parents.

They have taught me to keep my spirits up and my ego grounded. Both my father

and mother have emphasized on the importance of education and helped me

become a better person by learning new things every day.

My father is MD(Managing Director) at Bimansthal Hawai Yatru Sewa Byabastha

LTD. My mother is a housewife. My parents have always stood by me and

motivated me to work on myself and do good to the society. My family has a good

reputation in the community and my parents are financially capable of affording

my education. My parents have no visa rejections of any country till date.

Academic Background

As per my academics, I completed my school level (Grade 10) from Annapurna

English Secondary School, Kathmandu with Grade Point Average of 3.00 dated on

2017. Later, I completed my high school from Higher Secondary Education Board

2
of Nepal (HSEB), also known as +2 in the faculty of Hotel Management from

Global College of Management securing a Cumulative Grade Point Average of

2.56 in the year 2019. After completion of my basic course, I have been

researching about my field of interest and working hard to prepare myself for

abroad study for building a career. I took IELTS classes and appeared for the exam

on 23rd April 2021 and got an overall score of 6.

Explanation of Gap and Experience

After completion of my intermediate level, I decided to continue my Bachelors'

Degree as the border for Australia was then closed. I continued my Bachelor’s

degree for 2 semesters in NTP Tourism Affair College. I am currently involved in

processing my application to study in ECC/ECU. While studying here for 2

semester I realized that studying under Nepal’s education system would not be the

best option for me and to stand out among the crowd and bring out the best in me, I

need to be internationally certified.

Reason to choose Australia, why not Nepal?

I formed my mind to gain internationally recognized degree while studying my

Bachelors' Degree. For my further program, I wanted to study in an international

university/college to explore realistic teaching methods and my intended field of

3
interest is hospitality sector. When I was studying here I found education in Nepal

often faces challenges of quality, productivity, and relevance. The university

course in Nepal seriously lacks the practical approach of teaching and learning

environments. Nepal’s teaching technique is more of course work rather than

practical. My feeling is hospitality within a person builds up more from real

exposure/ trainings than just from books. Apart, Australian degree is globally

recognized compared to Nepalese’s degree due to its researched bases curriculum

and we can be recognized and establish my career anywhere in the world.

Moreover, the student to teacher ratio in Australia is around 15:1 while Nepalese

colleges keep about 50-60 students in single classroom, so students cannot totally

interact with the teacher. So, I found Australia is the best destination for my future

studies.

I had always a dream to get international degree in the field of hotel management

and I know that Australia is one of the best countries for international students to

pursue higher study because there are lots of renowned universities and colleges,

their programs are internationally recognized and practical oriented. Australia is

itself famous in terms of quality of education, quality of life, cultural diversity, safe

and friendly environment etc. Australia promotes innovation, creativity and

independent thinking through its universities. International students who study and

live in Australia soon find that their education is rewarding. International students

4
in Australia can expect to live, grow and learn in a young, friendly country with

full of opportunities. For those international students who successfully complete

their degree, they will soon find that they are competitive in today’s international

job market.

Reason for not choosing other overseas study destinations

Being exposed to an English medium environment and having English as a

mandatory primary language in school, I would definitely prefer acquiring my

further studies in an English-speaking country, like Australia, UK, USA and

Canada. While researching about colleges in these countries for my field of

interest, I went through a lot of websites, brochures, study abroad workshops and

consulted with my experienced family and friends as well.

United States of America has always been the traditional choice of country for

abroad study for a lot of students in Nepal. However, I believe the application

process and meeting all the requirements like SAT/ACT tests is quite a time-

consuming process, while considering the States as a study destination. Also, from

the safety point of view, I consider USA less secured as it does not have clear and

definite arms and ammunition control laws due to which multiple shooting in

various educational institutions have also been observed while Australia has a

reputation for being amongst the friendliest in the world. Adding to it, Australian

5
cities are cleaner and have a low rate of crime. Also, the student visa conditions for

USA changes frequently, which does not encourage me to apply to the States.

Talking about the United Kingdom, the living expenses as well as the educational

expense in UK is comparatively higher than that of Australia. The educational

institutions in UK are also known to be closed in a random basis without prior

information to the students and even worse, the course providers do not often take

responsibility for the loss faced by students due to their ignorance. Adding to it, the

Pound sterling is higher in currency rate, which makes it more expensive than

Australia, in context of Nepalese rupees.

In case of Canada, it is a beautiful county with good education but it lies in the

northern hemisphere, so the climate is in the extremes, so cold that it can reach up

to -25 degree Celsius which I have never faced where I have lived, and I would not

be able to adapt to the weather,

Considering all these factors, I feel like Australia is the best destination for abroad

study in my case. Moreover, there is also Education Services for Overseas Students

(ESOS) Act for protecting the rights of international students. The Education

Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) framework protects the rights of

international students studying in Australia including their right to receive accurate

information about their course of study, fees and refund service for international

students. Students are also allowed to work 20 hours per week while they study.

6
This aids students to gain work experience and make them work ready after their

graduation. Graduates from Australian universities are highly sought after due to

impressive international reputation of the Australian Education System. This

ensures my safe landing in the career path I have chosen.

Reason for choosing Perth among other cities in Australia

I have selected Perth over other Australian cities because of Perth being once of

attraction city for tourist. With tourist, the hotel industry is well settled within

Perth city. With established hotel industry, I can see an opportunity to learn and

grow more in hotel management sector and secured my career in hospitality sector.

Apart, I prefer to stay warm than cold. The weather in Perth matches my

preference. Perth has some of the most affordable housing of all Australian cities

with median rents around 40% cheaper than Sydney. Plus, ECC offers a 50%

discount at the Mount Lawley campus accommodation. Public transport within the

CBDs are also free. As a native of a Asian country, I have witnessed firsthand the

importance of focusing not only on customers in Asia, but also on the international

community as a whole. With this in mind, I hope to study in Australia in order to

improve my language abilities and become more competitive in the workplace of

the future. I have a very close friend at Perth also I will be residing with him

throughout my study period at 7A Hartfield Way, Westminster WA 6061 because I

have no relatives and he is the only person who is very close to my heart.

7
Reason for choosing Edith Cowan College

It was a difficult task to find a good university among the high numbers of

universities providing education in the field of hotel management. I started

searching for universities that meets my financial boundary and academic

requirement. I started my search on various websites, social media, exhibitions and

other references. In search of university via consultant suggestions, I found Edith

Cowan College (ECC). When I searched this university, I came to know, ECC has

produced many successful personals in hotel industry filed. It took couple of days

for me to analyze the College and later my doubt were all cleared once I went

through the course structure for hotel management Edith Cowan college has. ECC

has this specialty to provide students guaranteed industry level experience during

its diploma program which is very essential to develop my career in hospitality

industry. Not just that, diploma program acts as a 1st year undergraduate degree and

can be placed in second year bachelor’s degree program with in Edith Cowan

university (ECC). Edith Cowan University received top student rating among all

public universities in Australia in 2018. Not only that, Edith Cowan University

(ECU), ECU graduates have given the university a 5-star rating for teaching

quality. This rating has now been achieved for 12 years in a row. This makes ECU

8
one of just two public universities – and the only in Western Australia – to have

achieved such a consistently high endorsement for teaching quality. A 5-star rating

has again been awarded for skills development, student support, learning resources

and for the median salary of ECU graduates (this is based on the starting salary for

new domestic graduates under age 25, and in their first full-time job). ECU

welcomes students of all beliefs, nationalities and cultures and campuses have

vibrant and diverse environments so all students can feel home. As being

nationality of multicultural country, I will be able to adjust at university’s

multicultural environment. Likewise, university provides personalized student

service which ensures that students are supported and nurtured throughout

university life. These all factors made me choose ECC over other universities in

Australia.

I did research on the Hotel management courses at other universities of Australia

like UTS-In search, however the academic requirements /financials/course work

were not in-line with what I can afford and my interest. The quality of education

with affordable tuition fees and the educational environment in ECC is extremely

good and beyond what I was searching. Therefore, to pursue my Diploma and

later bachelor’s degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management I

choose ECC/ECU. Perth has campuses like Curtin University, Murdoch, Central

Queensland University but I chose ECC because the course I was interested was

9
available and was very suitable to what I wanted to study. Apart from this there are

colleges like ICMS, ICHM, Southern Cross University, Blue Mountain but Perth

is where I prefer to study so I chose ECC over them.

My research with other universities in Australia:

Along with ECC(EDU) there are other universities, some of which are: Murdoch

university, Curtin University, University of Western Australia and University of

Notre Dame. According to the source below:

https://www.thestudenthousingcompany.com.au/

Among all the universities and colleges in Western Australia, ECC(ECU) is ranked

2nd most successful institutions. From the same source, ECU is ranked 1 st In job

placements after graduation in Western Australia. As far as I am concerned with

the fee structure , ECU is one of the top universities with reasonable fee structure.

On the other hand , ECU provides a wide variety of courses within which it is

ranked 2nd for Hotel Management . the source for this data :

Reason for choosing Hotel Management

Hospitality as a career is an assured one because hospitality as an industry can

never wane and never can it come to an end. Hospitality is distinctive business

10
activity and has a critical role in global economy leading to create percentage of

jobs worldwide. And also, it performs major role in satisfying guest requirement in

one or the other way. Looking at the fast-growing hospitality industry in Nepal I do

see great opportunity to set my career as in the field of hospitality management. I

also have an interest in tourism industry, I see a clear vision regarding my future at

this point. My choice of pursuing a Diploma in Hospitality Management has been

motivated by my uncle who has been into Hospitality sector from last 20 years. My

Uncle owns Travel and tours company here in Kathmandu Nepal. I got an

opportunity to interact out with tourists, visit 5-star hotels and got myself attracted

into hospitality sector when I was small. With my interest, I further picked course

relevant to hotel management during my higher-level education. I got an exposure

on both academic and practical aspect of hotel management during 2-year period. I

got more motivated and my interest in hotel management grew more. I decided to

learn more on this field, thus I picked ECC for continuing to grow more in

hospitality sector.

It is my ambition to work as a key player in challenging and creative environment,

to be instrumental in organization’s growth, to realize my potential and explore

myself in productive manner and thus prove myself to be an asset for my country.

learning experience along with an excellent hotel environment will help me learn

more about the operations of hotels and build a successful career. The internship

After completion of my degree from ECC/ECU, I do see lot of opportunities

waiting for me here in my country Nepal. Nepal being the country rich in natural

beauty is a very popular tourist destination. So, the tourism and hospitality industry

are booming in an increasing ratio. In addition, places like Pokhara, Lumbini,

Mustang is famous for its beautiful lakes and mountains due to which tourists are

attracted. And surely the Majestic Mt. Everest and other big Himalayas have made

tourists visit Nepal for trekking. Many 5-star hotels like Marriott, HYATT, Soltee

Crowne Plaza, Radisson, Yak, and Yeti are speeding their operations and other

hotels are building their chains. Thus, I can get a job salary of approx. NPR 50,000

13
in the initial phase in the chain hotels after I graduate. Along with that I can also

see my career as a faculty in colleges and university at Nepal.

available through newspaper advertisement. Such advertisements are published in

some newspapers such as The Kathmandu Post, Kantipur, Gorkhapatra, Republics

Newspaper, etc.

After completion of the bachelor’s degree from ECC, I will apply for Bachelors

program within ECU and gain some expertise in finance/management and

accounting. With this expertise, I do see myself as strong candidate to be placed in

one of hospitality sector after completion of my degree. The Australian degree will

help me to acquire highly paid jobs in Nepal in comparison to local degree of

Nepal that will balance the cost of my education during my time in Australia.

Reasons to come back to Nepal

I would like to take you in to confidence that I do not anticipate staying in

Australia any longer than my study duration. Upon successful completion of my

education from your honorable country, I will unquestionably return to my

country. I have a clear vision regarding my career and certain career goals of mine

need to be fulfilled in my home country.

Being a responsible son, I have huge responsibilities towards my parents as well. I

have a very well-built emotional attachment to my family. We have strong family

14
values and bonding which does not allow me to stay away from my parents

particularly when they are growing old. I have always been supported by my

family financially and emotionally throughout the life. After all parents have

worked hard and scarified a lot of things to meet my need and dreams since

childhood days so, it becomes my responsibility to be with them and make them

happy by fulfilling their needs during their old age. The responsibilities and

bonding towards my family, relatives, friends and my country will compel me to

return to Nepal.

Nepal is known for temples and Himalayas which makes one of attraction place for

tourist. With tourist, I can see hotel industry in Nepal can never wane. Once I’m

equipped with the knowledge and expertise to excel in hospitality industry and

with the backing of a prestigious institute ECC/ECU. I would like to be a part of

hospitality sector opening small business within my nation. My dream and career

goals will only be fulfilled after coming back to Nepal keeping family and work

balanced.
