PHRASAL VERBS
- What is a phrasal verbs?
A phrasal verb is a standard verb, are very common in English, they are generally used in
informal contexts. They are composed by a verb and a particle, sometimes two particles,
phrasal verbs consist of a verb and a preposition or an adverb.
Examples: Get up, look after, go away, hang out, take after, go through, put away, write
down, bring together

Sometimes is very difficult to understand the meaning of some phrasal verbs because
depending of to use the context
Go out
 Did you go out last friday? (Leave your home for a social activity)
 There fire is gone out (stopped burning)
 The tide will go out at around 5 today (go away from the shore)
Broke down

 My bike broke down (stopped moving)


 Talk between the two persons broke down (ended in failure)
 He broke down when we told her the news (started crying)

Transitive phrasal verbs
Are those that are followed by direct complements, is to say these need something or
someone after the verb. Such as dream it up, give it up, give it away, leave it out, mess it
up, switch it off, wipe it off.
Intensitive phrasal verbs
Are those that are not followed by direct complements, is to say stands on this own. Such as
come back, carry on, fall apart, fall over, roll over, move over, sell out, run away

Separable phrasal verbs
The separable phrasal verbs allow other words of the sentence to be inserted in the middle
of a phrasal verb.
Take off
You can to say:
 I took off my shoes
Separating the phrasal verb
 I took my shoes off
Call off
 They called off the class
 We have to call the meeting off
Call back
 Call me back in ten minutes
 Can you call me back?
 I have to call my mother back

Inseparable phrasal verbs


Are those that the verb and the preposition always go together

 I´m getting rid of these shoes. Do you want any of them?


 I´m looking after my nephew tonight
 She´s really looking forward to his holiday in Finland

The use of mobile phones has totally changed the way we communicate
Currently the use of mobile is part of our daily routine, and clearly this has certain advantages
and disadvantages. Some of the advantages are that you can call up someone whenever you
want since current technology allows it, find out news thigs through the internet and you can
also meet new people. But it also has disadvantages like that the interpersonal relationships
are break up since people often prefer to stay on their mobile and not interact with your
family or friends.
