IMF leader must be selected in open, transparent way, urge NGOs

WASHINGTON/DEAUVILLE (May 23, 2011)—The selection of the next leader of the
International Monetary Fund should be done in a transparent and inclusive manner, said the
U.S-based NGO alliance, InterAction, whose work focuses on the world’s most poor and
vulnerable populations.

“Today’s fragile global financial system continues to experience shocks that will impact the
world’s poor. How the IMF helps shape the response over the next few years will be determined
by its new leadership,” said Samuel A. Worthington, president and CEO of InterAction.

With more than 190 members, InterAction is the largest alliance of U.S.-based NGOs working in
the developing world.

The IMF’s executive board has promised the selection process, which is expected to be
complete by June 30, will be “open, merit-based and transparent”. World leaders meeting at the
G8 meeting in Deauville, France, this week (May 26-27) should follow through on this pledge.

“The selection and orientation of the new head of the IMF should reflect the best of the global
financial system, not its shortcomings,” added Worthington

Emerging countries should be allowed to put forward their own candidates for a post that has
been held for the past 65 years by wealthy, industrialized nations, he added.

“InterAction members also hope that the next leader of the IMF will have not only strong central
bank or finance minister qualifications, but also the intention to focus on the world’s most poor
and vulnerable populations,” he said.

In recent years, civil society groups have had a positive dialogue with the IMF on a range of
issues, a relationship which Worthington said he hoped would continue.

“InterAction looks forward to facilitating this dialogue and working closely with the new leadership
of the IMF,” he added.
