PHIHUM - D
COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course aims to deepen and solidify the prior courses on Understanding, Culture, Society, and
Politics; Introduction to Philosophy of the Human Person; Ignatian Leadership and Mission; and
Understanding the Self. It is concerned with the human person as an embodied spirit. The main

the question of death ultimately leading to his relationship with the Absolute. This course will
involve students in critical and creative dialogue with various philosophical thoughts and hopefully
will provide a venue for social engagement that will lead to a deepened social awareness necessary
for social transformation through “The Exchange Program.”
COURSE OBJECTIVES

1. To broaden the students’ understanding of being

human;
2. To situate philosophical reflection within the context of
inter-human, the social, and the Absolute;
3. To inculcate in the students the values of love, justice,
and hope;
4. To deepen students’ social awareness, social concern
and social engagement.
COURSE OUTCOMES

1. Students should be able to write reflection papers on the following topics:

knowledge, freedom and responsibility, love, death using the phenomenological
method.

2. Students should be able to demonstrate wise judgment by applying the

fundamental philosophical principles in various situations in which they find
themselves.

Exchange” in their overt behavior by being actively committed to the development of
a more humane society.

NARRATIVE BASED REFLECTION

1. WHAT IS THE CONTEXT? (WHAT IS THE SITE AND

SURROUNDING AREA LOOK LIKE)?
·
- The Philippine Coconut Authority’s environment is so clean and organized. The tall, smurf, and hybridcoconut trees were planted in
place. The surroundings look like a forest or a coconut park. The Philippine Coconut Authority is filled with several coconut trees all
around the area and with their various kinds of coconut fruits.
 - Chinitos Asian Kitchen Comissary is just like a house. This is where they cook their food. While Chinitos Restaurant has Barista
Corner.
- The We Care Nursing Home looks like a small park as therewere dwarf statues on the trees and there's a house, and a 2-story building
that occupies most of the space of the park.
- Sunnyland Garden’s surroundings is peaceful and relaxing
- Honda motors company at Nuñez Ext. Highway has a very large and nice area. As you enter inside the shop, you can see the spacious
area of it that can fit up to 20 cars inside it. Inside the store where all the negotiations happen, there are different types of models of cars
that are ready to be sold to people who will come inside the store. Every day they have different transactions inside the store like selling
cars, different parts of it and the maintenance of their customers cars.
- Yamaha is a motorcycle company where customers can buy motorcycles. Yamaha also has a service center For motorcycle
maintenance.·
- Garden Orchid Hotel is a 3.5-star hotel located at Zamboanga City. The hotel has approximately 2 smoke-free, air-conditioned
guestrooms, restaurant and bar/lounge, outdoor pool, and a fitness center. The hotel is known best at handling grand events,
debut/birthday celebrations and wedding receptions.
NARRATIVE BASED REFLECTION
2. WHO ARE THE KEY PLAYERS? (WHO IS INVOLVED? WHO
IS THERE? WHAT ROLES DO THEY PERFORM OR FILL? WHO ARE YOU
IN THE CONTEXT OF THIS PLACE?)

- Philippine Coconut Authority: The people involved in that area are the workers of different department and work
fields, and co-exchange students. Other worker sort husks and are making a rope out of coconut husk; others are
making a doormat, lamp, flower pots, and other creative coconut output; and other workers test and make briquettes;
there are also workers who are assigned  cocofed, testing and planting the new coconut plants in the nursery area, etc.
As part of the people in a workplace, I consider myself as a worker. Doing the same job as them. We worked there as
regular employees deployed in the different fields of work such as briquette-making and coconut “coir” matting.
- Chinitos Asian Kitchen: Owner, Manager, Waiter and Waitress, Dishwashers, Cooks
- We Care Nursing Home: There were old men/women that lies in bed and they were the patients. There were also care
givers that pays attention to the patient's needs.
- Sunnyland Garden: The employees who fulfill their duties as gardeners and some as staff in their small carinderia.
- Honda Motors Company: The people in the front desk are the ones who are entertaining customers, the employees
who stays in the lobby , they have one manager who controls their hop where they would paint or re-paint models of
their cars, they also have one manager who controls the shop where they would fix and arrange cars for maintenance.
and they have their general manager who control everything in the store and in the shops.
- Yamaha: Owner, Manager, and Employees
 - Garden Orchid Hotel: Supervisor, Employees/Staff, Customers/Guests.
NARRATIVE BASED REFLECTION
3. WHAT GOES ON THERE? (WHAT DO PEOPLE SAY AND DO?
HOW DO THEY INTERACT WITH ONE ANOTHER? HOW DO YOU
INTERACT WITH THEM?)

- Philippine Coconut Authority: The people have their own roles and works inside the PCA. The people in the
areas where we were assigned does their job in a not-so-hassle way. I have observed that they really give
attention to time. If it is break time, they would go and eat and be back after a while to continue their jobs. They
do not stress themselves. They interact with others as if they are a family, they respect one another. The way
they interact with us is the same as how they interact with their known friends. They do not treat us as outsiders,
instead, they guide us and leave us a job. I can feel that they really trust us with the tasks they give us.
- Chinitos Asian kitchen: The people assigned in different areas were doing their assigned tasks well. They greet
and treat people as their priority. We also listened to the instructions of the employees well to show our
willingness.
- WeCare Nursing: The people there were old men/women that needs care as they have different illnesses. They
just lie in bed and only few of them could walk and talk with other patients. We talk softly as we can to the
patients so that they will not feel bad to us and we also sing for them to entertain them.
- SunnyLand: They need more kinds of plant seedlings. They interact through talking they have their own
jargons in their work.
NARRATIVE BASED REFLECTION
3. WHAT GOES ON THERE? (WHAT DO PEOPLE SAY AND DO?
HOW DO THEY INTERACT WITH ONE ANOTHER? HOW DO YOU
INTERACT WITH THEM?)

- Honda Motors Company: The employees there are very accommodating and very thoughtful because they will
always remind us to have our break or our lunch every day. From what I see on how they communicate with one
another is that they have a close bond and I think they treat everyone there as their family or friend and not as an
employee or a co-worker. Because I can see them every day mingle with everyone on their work and even though
they do not have the same position in the company they still joke like they just have the same position with
everybody.
- YAMAHA: Motorcycle sales, and motorcycle service center.
- Garden Orchid Hotel: The employees of different departments such as housekeeping, service, laundry etc, are
doing their designated tasks or work to keep the hotel working. Every department has an essential task in order
for the company to function.Despite of the adversities faced by the employees, kindness and courtesy should be
reflected upon their attitude towards accommodating the guests of the hotel.Supervisor of every department
should supervise their co-workers to ensure the productivity and work of great quality done by the employees.
4. REALIZATIONS

I have realized that there are still people who will treat
you as a family even if you just met them for a short
period of time. They give their full trust on you in doing
the tasks they have given you. The workers are also
NARRATIVE BASED approachable and are willing to give you guidance if you
REFLECTION needed it. I also have realized that even though jobs
seem to be difficult and challenging, but if you are
willing to learn, you can really do better at it.·
I have realized that despite the exhaustion of what the
work has given us it was still a great experience having
undergone actual work because this experience helped
me appreciate more of working that we always have to
strive in life, having patience to be able to succeed.
We have to respect everyone equally. You should allow
yourself to learn from others Working is not really easy
especially standing only for 8 straight hours. Be patient.
Follow the commands of the employees.
We should take care our grandparents because they are
already old and does not have much force to take care of
themselves. We should love them and cherish every
moment with them while they are still alive.
I have realized that people are passionate in different
ways.
I think the realization that I can draw from my experience from
working in the Honda Motors is that it is very important that you
should have a close bond with your co-worker because they are
NARRATIVE the ones who will be with you throughout the day. And also
cleaning your work place every day is very important because
BASED cleanliness is the very first thing that a person or a customer
would love to see to the store where she’s in.
REFLECTION Working is tiring, and customers are not always kind· We should
always be kind and be respectful, not only to the guests,
costumers and to your bosses but to every person that you meet.
Not everyone is facing the same battle as you are.
There are many things that we should be grateful of. Life is
harder than it seems, not everyone is as fortunate as you.
Sometimes, the little things that we don’t appreciate are the
things that others are grateful of.
Attitude towards work is important. In everything that you do,
do it with love. Passion towards work maximizes productivity
and minimizes your exhaustion. Through experiences, we
become better learners. There are many things that we may not
learn from school but through the experiences that we encounter
in life.
In life we have to appreciate the work we do with all our heart
because it is only through that way that you will truly learn to act
right and serve with willingness. This idea gives soul to the job
that you are doing.
