WHAT

IS MUSIC? (Lucas)

è In general Music is the art of arranging sounds in time through the elements of melody,
harmony, rhythm, and timbre.

EVOLUTION OF MUSIC

è 1900’s (nineteen hundreds) — Operas (Billie)

Opera comes from Greece which was later developed in Europe. Starting from the performance of
plays including the works of Aeschyulus, Sophocles, and Euripides, in a theater building. Scenes in
the play are accompanied by chorus and music, which are also used to amplify or emphasize the
piece of story that is being played.

The forerunner of modern Opera appeared in Italy around the 16-17th (sixteenth until seventeenth)
century in the city of Florence. At that time a number of intellectuals often gathered in Count Bardi's
private room which later formed a small community called Cameratta. This community sees the
emotional power of music combined with words.

1920’s (nineteen twenties) — Jazz (Billie)

Started in the late 19th (nineteenth) and early 20th (twentieth) centuries, jazz has its musical roots
in New Orleans, Louisiana where it combines American and European classical music with African
and slave folk songs with a touch of West African culture. The content of the music has also evolved
over the course of hundred and fifty years in the form of different subgenres.

The music gained in popularity during the Jazz Age, 1920s (nineteen twenties) and 1930s (nineteen
thirties) where it affected the cultural landscape in political, social, and economic experiences. The
Jazz Age ran parallel to the “Roaring Twenties”, a period during the 1920s (nineteen twenties) where
there was a movement of achieving economic prosperity after the end of War World I.

1940’s (nineteen fourties) — Country (Wita)

Originally country music shared structural similarities with folk tales. The performances were usually
live and the songs and instrumentation would vary depending on the geographical location.
Listening to traditional country music allowed one to learn about the history and culture of that
area, making it a very personal genre that proved hard to make accessible on a large scale.

Musicians who studied and drew upon these traditional tunes began to pop-up over time, creating
fusions between the styles of different regions. It wasn’t until the 1920’s (nineteen twenties) these
musicians such as Fiddlin’ John Carson and Jimmie Rodgers were given an opportunity to record
their music.

1950’s (nineteen fifties) — Blues (Wita)

The blues has deep roots in American history, particularly African-American history. The blues
originated on Southern plantations in the 19th (nineteenth) Century. Its inventors were slaves, ex-
slaves and the descendants of slaves—African-American sharecroppers who sang as they toiled in
the cotton and vegetable fields. It's generally accepted that the music evolved from African
spirituals, African chants, work songs, field hollers, rural fife and drum music, revivalist hymns, and
country dance music. The blues grew up in the Mississippi Delta just upriver from New Orleans, the
birthplace of jazz. Blues and jazz have always influenced each other, and they still interact in
countless ways today.

2000’s (two thousands) — Hip-hop (Anggi)

When hip hop music first developed in the late 1970s (nineteen seventies), not many people knew
about it. It was created in the poorest districts of New York City by African American and Latino
teenagers as part of a hip hop scene that also produced breakdancing and graffiti art. Many of these
young people were unemployed, but some found work as DJs in discos where they learned
deejaying techniques like how to use two turntables and a DJ mixer to play records non-stop.
Sometimes they'd also deejay at free block parties in their neighbourhoods where they'd play funk
and disco tracks non-stop and ask a friend to act as their MC.

The MC would introduce the DJ and encourage everyone to dance and have a good time. Some MCs
tried to be more entertaining by talking in time to the beat of the music and using rhymes, and by
doing this they invented rapping.

2010’s (twenty ten) — Pop (Anggi)

During the mid to late 19th (nineteenth) century, many households gathered around the pianos in
their homes and enjoyed hearing members of their family play music. This is where we can trace the
beginnings to pop music as we know it. To meet the demand for sheet music, the publishing
industry was established.

They were looking for popular artists and printed their music for sale, making it available for other
musicians to perform. In the early 1900s (nineteen hundreds) when the phonograph was introduced,
this evolved to listening to recorded performances, kickstarting physical sales of music.
