SUMMER SAILING 2019

Rouen – Scheveningen
The Liberty Tall Ships Regatta of 2019 coincides with the 75th anniversary of D-day and the liberation of
occupied territory in Northwestern Europe during the Second World War. This event will celebrate not
only the Tall Ship fleet in itself, but also the international friendship and exchange among young people
of different nationalities which characterize every tall ships event. After a majestic Parade of Sail down
the river Seine, we will start what will surely be an exhilarating race to the Netherlands, making our way
around a number of waypoints in the English Channel and eventually finishing by sailing into our own
home port, Scheveningen.

Throughout the years, the Europa and her crew have
become famous for making spectacular entrances
into harbor, coming in under full sail long after
other ships have taken their sails away and started
their engines. The entrance into our home port after
finishing another circumnavigation of the Atlantic will
be no exception.
Primarily a fishing port in the past, Scheveningen
has in the last couple of years increasingly become a
hub for both sailors and surfers. With its long white
beach and quiet sand dunes, and the bustling and
international city of The Hague right next door, this
location offers something for everyone. And what
better place to end the celebration of the liberation of
Europe than in the Hague, famous for being home to
the International Court of Justice and the International
Criminal Court – some of the world’s most important
institutions for peace and justice.

As the trip comes to an end, make sure to take

some time to explore this beautiful part of
Scandinavia before returning home. Northern
Jutland offers visitors a barren landscape with soft
sand dunes which earned the region the nickname
‘Lysets Land’ - Land of the Light. For many years,
painters have been coming here to try to capture
the nuances of the light and the serenity of the
landscape. With its long white beaches, the region
also attracts some surfers and beach-goers. And of
course, you may not forget to devour some fresh-
off the boat sea food while you’re there.

After crossing the finish line, the Europa will take part
in another Parade of Sail up the Vesterelva river and
into Fredrikstad. Located not far from the Swedish
border, Fredrikstad is a cosy Scandinavian town and
home to the best preserved fortress town in Northern
Europe. Once an important trading centre between
western Scandinavia and the rest of Europe and his-
torically an important shipbuilding harbor, the town
offers the perfect setting for the tall ships.
Fredrikstad – Amsterdam
After joining in the festivities in Fredrikstad, the
Europa will part ways with the other tall ship and head
back to the Netherlands, as her demanding all year-

round schedule requires that a few weeks each year
are spent in the shipyard for maintenance. This last
trip of the summer season will bring the ship and her
crew across the Skagerak and the North Sea, and fin-
ish in the city center of Amsterdam. This is the ideal
voyage for those who are interested in doing a longer
ocean voyage or Antarctica expedition, but want to try
out their sea legs on a shorter trip to start. Or for those
who simply prefer a calmer trip, away from the flurry of
the Tall Ships’ races. Whatever your reason, we warmly
invite you to join us for this last trip of the summer
season, to bring the Europa all the way home.

professional sailors from all over the world, and
often also have the most international set of
trainees. Wherever you are from, coming on
board you can be sure to make friends from the
other side of the world.

• With her experienced permanent crew and keen-

to-learn trainees, the Europa has become known
as a ship which really sails and is famous for her
spectacular entrances. Coming into harbor
under full sail, we can be sure to render some
jealous looks from the other ships.

• The culture on board the Europa is relaxed – you

will not find any officers in uniforms or hear any
whistles for sail handling here. This creates an
open atmosphere where trainees, crew and officers
all work together and learn from each other.

• Last but not least, let’s not forget about our galley
crew, who never cease to amaze crew and trainees
with the wonderful food that can be prepared at
sea. Yum!
