PRACTICE
Instruction: Answer the following.
1. Identify whether each process is spontaneous or non-spontaneous.
SPONTANEOUS a. Silverware’s tarnish when exposed to air.
NON-SPONTANEOUS b. Table salt dissociates into sodium and chlorine ions in water.
NON-SPONTANEOUS c. Water molecules form from hydrogen and oxygen gases.
NON-SPONTANEOUS d. Water decomposes into hydrogen and oxygen gases with application
of electricity.
SPONTANEOUS e. Wood burns to ash after being set on fire.

2. Predict the sign (positive or negative) of the change in entropy for the following processes.
POSITIVE a. Decomposition of carbonic acid (H2CO3) into water and carbon
dioxide.
POSITIVE b. Sublimation of naphthalene (mothballs).
POSITIVE c. Melting of lead metal at room temperature
NEGATIVE d. Formation of dinitrogen tetroxide N2O4 from nitrogen dioxide:
2NO2(g) → N2O4(g)
POSITIVE e. Combustion of ethane C2H6 gas: 2C2H6(g) +7O2(g) → 4CO2(g) +
6H2O(g)
