SESSION: 2018-2019 B.TECH 8th SEMESTER.
Mid Semester (Spring Sem.) Examination-2019 Duration of Examination: 2 hours
Sub: Advanced Mechanics of Solids (CE-427) Full Marks: 30

Answer any five questions. All questions carry equal marks.

Q1. A structure is subjected to two force systems, each separately produces the stress conditions
at a point as shown in the Fig.1. Determine the principal stresses and maximum shearing
stress and their orientations at the point under the effect of combined loading.

Q2. Derive differential equation of equilibrium for a stressed 3D body in terms of stress
components at a point and components of body force per unit volume with the help of
neat sketch.

Q3a. Explain the condition of compatibility.

b. Write the relationships connecting the constants (a’s,b’s and c’s) to make the following
expressions possible ?

𝑢 = 𝑎0 𝑥 2 𝑦 2 + 𝑎1 𝑥𝑦 2 + 𝑎2 𝑥 2 𝑦
𝑣 = 𝑏0 𝑥 2 𝑦 + 𝑏1 𝑥𝑦
𝛾𝑥𝑦 = 𝑐0 𝑥 2 𝑦 + 𝑐1 𝑥𝑦 + 𝑐2 𝑥 2 + 𝑐3 𝑦 2
Q4a. Explain plane stress and plane strain conditions with example.
b. Derive the Beltrami –Michell equation for plane strain case .

Q5. A cylinder of 150 mm internal diameter and 450 mm outer diameter is subjected to an
internal pressure of 160 MPa and the external pressure of 80 MPa. Find the maximum
radial, tangential and longitudinal stresses and the maximum shear stress if the ends
are closed. Also calculate the diametrical expansion or contraction of the cylinder.
Q6. A steel member having E=210GPa and ν =0.29 ,is subjected to a state of plane strain ,
when the design load is applied. The stress components at a critical point in the member
80 −60
are given by [ ] MPa. The material has yield stress of 480MPa. Find the factor of
−60 250
safety used in the design by using (1) maximum shear stress and (2) maximum strain energy
criterions.
Q7. Write briefly about (1) strain invariants, (2) Hydrostatic and deviatory stress tensor
(3) Airy’s Stress function and (4) Generalized Hook’s Law for isotropic material.
