One of the most controversial issues parents face when raising their children is
whether to use spanking as a form of punishment. In this episode of The Dads
Lab, Daddy Clay and Daddy Brad talk with Dr. Elizabeth Gershoff, a professor who has been researching the topic. Watch this two-part video and answer the questions below.
7. Dr. Gershoff talks about three different ways to physically punish a child. What are those ways and what differences are there among them?
8. What percentage of American parents acknowledge to ever having
spanked their children? 9. How many types of spankers are there?
10. What consequences does spanking have, according to research?
11. What is Dr. Gershoff personal view on the consequences of occasional
spanking? 12. ________was the first country to turn spanking into an illegal action in ________. After that, ________other countries implemented spanking bans in schools, _________, and ___________. 13. Banning spanking comes from the United Nations ___________________________________________, which states that ________________________________. In the US, parents may go____________ if they spank their children but in Sweden they won’t because spanking falls, not into the category of Criminal Law but in the one of _______________. Other countries like _____________ have made spanking a reason to go to jail. • Spanking if needed at all is just a small part of parenting. There are good parents that spank and there are bad parents that spank. There are good parents that don't spank and there are bad parents that don't. Spanking is a cultural thing and a small part of parenting. It depends on the child and the overall family. I know some great people that if not spanked wouldn't have the character they have today. When spanking is taken away the whole parenting method must change, which changes the child. • Europe is losing their youth since spanking has been banned. 20+ years ago their children were much better behaved than children in the US. Now their youth is just as bad if not worse. People equate spanking with anger. An adult can spank a child without doing it out of anger. Comparing spanking to abuse is like comparing grounding to abuse. You can beat and child and call it spanking just as you can lock a child in their room for days and call it grounding. billybassman21 hace 3 meses • DON'T EVER, EVER SPANK YOUR CHILDREN BECAUSE ALL THAT DOES IS TEACH THEM TO HIT! MY BEST FRIEND TRIED TO KILL HERSELF IN MIDDLE SCHOOL BECAUSE SHE WAS SICK OF GETTING HIT SO HARD. NOT SHE IS IN A FOSTER HOME AND HER PARENTS ARE SERVING LIFE FOR BEING REGULAR SPANKERS. d103cc hace 6 meses • My father spanked and backhanded and picked us up and threw us, etc. I was terrified of him even into adulthood. It prompted the worst behaviors our teenaged brains could conceive of for fear of reprisals but when time for marriage came, I ended up with an abuser. So is there a link? IDK but it does leave a female child with a fear of men. goldensassenach hace 8 meses • Interestingly enough, in the public school my brothers and I went to spanking with a paddle was common. I was never paddled and was TERRIFIED of even possibly getting paddled. However, my eldest brother who had ADD (this was before it was as widely treated and accepted) was often paddled. He went onto drug abuse and a criminal lifestyle. I can easily accept the evidence that connects these things. Thankfully he's clean and a great dad now! I disagree and I will not be taking the no spank pledge. When my little girl is born she’s gonna be raised spanked, just like me. MajorDestruction hace 9 meses • I was spanked, but not by my Parents! My Pastor did it! I went to a private school that was kinda strict. I got spanked for everything and for not doing my homework. First time I got 5 waks, the second I took ten, but I am proud to say, I didn't cry. I took my punishment like a man! I remember the confused face Pastor made when I didn't cry. Now it's mostly illegal, thank God. DadLabs hace 9 meses • I actually went to a Christian school when I was a kid. My Parents had to sign papers saying it was alright for the Pastor to spank me, but they never thought it would come to that. After it did, they took me out (finally I hated that school) & I went back to Public school where I hardly ever got into any trouble. VoyagersOmni hace 9 meses • Interesting. Thanks for posting your story. DadLabs hace 9 meses • I still think there are better ways to deal with problems than spanking. It does not set the right example for children. AmyAgainstIgnorance hace 9 meses • I still stand by my comments from the 1st video. Spanking has its place and can be an effect tool if used appropriately. creatine64 hace 9 meses
