INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY PATNA

B.Tech. (Chemical Engineering)

End-Semester Examination (ESE)
Odd Semester - 2020-21
Chemical Reaction Engineering - CB301
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Full Marks: 25 Time: 2 Hours Exam Slot: 2-5 PM Date: 25/11/2020

Notes: 1. Please write your name and roll number on your answer copy.
2. Please send scanned copy of your answer sheet copy by email to
sksamanta@iitp.ac.in or krsanju07@gmail.com and also whatsapp
at 7033582467 within scheduled finish time of exam (5 PM). Please
give a declaration citing your reason if you need extra time for
submission.
3. Make suitable assumptions if required & state the same.
4. Notations bear their usual meaning and significance.
5. This is a closed book, closed note exam. You are not permitted to
see any teaching materials (soft or hard copy material, books, e-books,
or online/internet material). However, self hand-written one A4 paper
containing maximum 20 lines can be used during exam which you need
to whatsapp me even before starting of exam and you must attach it
with your answer copy. Any programmed calculation is strictly not
allowed. Detailed steps of solutions are very essential for any
numerical or mathematical problem (with suitable assumptions if required).
6. Answers should be brief and to the point.

Answer All Questions (Marks are indicated against each question)

1. Determine the heat of reaction at temperature T2 using the heat of reaction at temperature T1 for any
reaction by applying the law of conservation of energy. Assume temperature dependent molar specific
heats. 2 Marks
2. What is holding time for flow reactors? How is it related with space time? 2 Marks
3. Write down the important reasons of non-ideal behaviour of reactors. What is Residence Time
Distribution (RTD)? How do you find RTD curve from pulse experiment? [1+1+1 = 3 Marks]
4. Where do you apply Jones method? What are the pre-requisites to apply Jones method?
Briefly explain. 2.5 Marks
5. What do you mean by instantaneous fractional yield for parallel reactions? Draw an arbitrary graph
between instantaneous fractional yield and reactant concentration and show how to determine the
amount of desired product graphically for PFR and MFR? Redraw the same graph and explain the
best combinations of PFR and MFR to avail the highest amount of desired product graphically.
[1+2+1.5 = 4.5 Marks]

6. Between 2°C and 108°C, determine the equilibrium conversion for the elementary aqueous reaction:
A ↔ R, ∆G0 298 = -12800 J/mol, ∆H0 298 = -68500 J/mol, CpA = 48 J/mol.K, CpR = 56 J/mol.K.
(i) Present the results in the form of a plot of temperature versus equilibrium conversion.
(ii) What restrictions should be placed on the reactor operating temperature (isothermal operation) if
we require a conversion of 68% or higher? [4.5+1=5.5 Marks]

7. Derive a relationship between conversion, temperature change and heat of reaction for any steady
state flow reactor at (i) adiabatic and (ii) non-adiabatic conditions using mass and energy balances.
Mention all the notations. [4.5+1 = 5.5 Marks]
