Question 1: (7)

During crystallization suitable super-saturation needs to be maintained for growth of

crystals. One such way is the addition of an anti-solvent. Derive an equation for the rate
of addition of anti-solvent Q on the same lines of what you have studied for evaporating
and cooling crystallization. Growth rate G has to be maintained constant. The dependence
of saturation solubility on amount of anti-solvent is given by:
𝑪𝑺 = 𝒂𝟏 + 𝒂𝟐 𝒙𝒕
Where xt is the mass fraction of anti-solvent present in crystallizer at time t.
Make suitable assumption wherever necessary.

Question 2: (5)

A continuous vacuum evaporating MSMPR crystallizer is used to produce 2,000 kg/hr of

MgSO4.7H2O. Density of heptahydrate crystals is 1.68 g/cm3. Mean residence time of
crystallizer is 2 hr. The desired dominant size LD is 0.42 mm. The magma density is 0.1
(m3 crystals)/(m3 of solution). Estimate: (i) required crystal growth rate in m/h, (ii)
necessary nucleation rate in no./(h.m3) of mother liquor, (iii) number of crystals
produced per hour. Take volume shape factor of 0.6.

Question 3: (5)

Homogeneous primary nucleation rate is function of supersaturation ratio ‘s’. If for a

particular crystallization, supersaturation concentration is increased by 10% keeping
other parameters same, how much will be % increase in homogeneous nucleation rate.
Initial supersaturation concentration is 0.052 kg/m3 while equilibrium saturation is
0.041 kg/m3.
