Construction Details - Rubblizing Existing Portland Cement Concrete Pavement
Check that all underdrains are installed 2 weeks before rubblizing starts.
Remove existing asphalt overlays as per Contract Plans.
Check that all existing HMA overlays having areas greater than 30 sf are removed.
Select test section (1000' length). Rubblize 250' with initial settings.
Test for acceptable pattern prior to Production Rubblizing.(Max 6" size, 1' at free edge).
Check bottom of slab (18" max. size and no pavement deformation under rollers).
Check that production rubblizing proceeds across pavement width (transverse to roadway).
Check for poor subase support (large pieces away from free edge, rutting, pieces driven down).
Check that these areas are excavated and replaced as per contract plans.
Make sure no vibratory rollers are used to compact repair areas.
Check that pavement hardware (wire fabric, rebars) do not extend beyond surface (cut off
flush).
Check that loose joint sealent material and expansion joint material are removed.
Check that rubblized pavement is compacted as per Section 203-3.12.
Check that depressions are filled with coarse aggregate (<3" - CA1, >3" - CA2).
Check for tolerance of compacted surface (3/4" in 15').
