Quality Control Checklist: Structural Steel Painting Checklist
Review Specs for Paint - Section 708-01 Structural Steel Paints - Class 1
Contractor submitted Manufact. Tech. Data Sheets 5 days prior to start of work (573-2.01D)*
Each single coat pf paint has a different color and provides contrast to the previous coats (573-
2.01C)
Pressure wash water is potable and abrasive is recycled ferrous metal grit (573-2.02, 03)
Contractor provided copy of Quality Control Plan for compliance with paint specs (573-3.01) *
Daily reports provided with air and surface temperatures, humidity and dew points, dry film
thickness, surface profile, etc.
Cleaning standard conforms to SSPC VIS 1 Pictorial Standard (573-3.02C)
Three (3) full coats of paint are applied and one (1) stripe coat (primer, intermediate stripe coat,
finish) (572-3.03)
Paint Schedule followed: Primer - 10 hours; Intermediate -72 hours; top coat - 14 days or less
(Manufacturer's Recommendation) (573-3.03G)
Stenciled information placed on inside web of fascia girder near BIN plate (573-3.03H)
PRESSURE WASHING YES NO N/A
To be performed first, followed by abrasive blast cleaning. Reference SSPC SP-10, near white
metal
Operating Pressure 1800 psi -2000 psi (12.5 MPa -14 Mpa). Flow Rate 3.5 Gal/min minimum.
Water temperature 185F-203F. Potable Water Source (85C - 95C)
Nozzle Distance 6" to 12" from steel surface
Ambient Air Temperature > 40 F and rising
Standard Specification states " In no case will pressure washing be conducted when spent
wastewater could freeze on roadway or bridge surfaces
Bird droppings in excess of 1/2" will be removed prior to pressure washing operation.
Oil and grease removed by solvent cleaning per SSPC SP1 Solvent Cleaning
Containment required to catch paint chips. Not required to capture wastewater. Water will not be
recycled.
Abrasive blast cleaning begins within 7 calendar days following washing
Surface completely dry prior to blast cleaning
Hold point for inspection of cleaned surface prior to abrasive blasting.
Material: Recyclable ferrous metallic abrasive grit conforming to SSPC AB-3 Ferrous Metallic
Abrasive. Submit invoices for approval.
All abrasive grit recycled and cleaned. Conforms to SSPC AB-2
Relative humidity below 85% to proceed. (Inside Containment)
Surface clean and dry to proceed
Surface temperature more than 5 F above the dew point to proceed
All surfaces cleaned to near white metal conforming to SSPC SP-10
Recycled abrasive material tested daily for non-abrasive residue, water soluble and oil content.
Forward results to Engineer.
Lead content tests performed weekly. Forward results to Engineer.
Verify air cleanliness once per shift.
Area cleaned limited to that which can be cleaned, inspected and prime coated within a 10 hour
period.
Prepare at least one project cleaning standard for each representative area. Conform to SSPC
VIS1. Minimum size 12" X 12". Coated with urethane after acceptance.
Measure anchor profile. Minimum 5 times/ 2000 SF / shift. Conform to ASTM D4417C. Hold
profile to paint manufacturer, data sheet.
Remove all fins, tears, flame cut edges, burred and sharp edges by grinding. Re-blast grinded
surfaces.
Vacuum containment and clean beam surfaces
Hold point for inspection and acceptance prior to painting.
