1. Use the data to calculate volume of oxygen consumed and volume of carbon dioxide
produced (VO2 and VCO2 in L.min-1). and respiratory exchange ratio (RER) as
follows:
Calculated values
VO2
(% O2 in inspired air - % O2 in expired air) x Minute ventilation = VO2 (L.min-1).
100
VCO2
(% CO2 in expired air - % CO2 in inspired air) x Minute ventilation = VCO2 (L.min-1).
100
RER
RER = VCO2/VO2
Now use the RER data to estimate the percentage fat and carbohydrates used for energy at
each exercise level by reading them from the graph below:

Use the following website link to make an estimate of the rate of energy use (kCal.min-1) at
each exercise level - be careful to get the units right!!

http://www.braydenwm.com/calburn.htm
You need to enter your age, weight, sex and heart rate then click in the calculator button to
get the other values filled in.
You will need a reference to state that there is a linear relationship between HR and exercise
level over the range you are working in – there is a suggestion on the website above but you
will need to look it up for the proper reference

METHOD:
You may need to make some changes to the scale of the recording channels –
remember that you can do this during the analysis phase too.
Complete recordings at rest, very light, light and moderate exercise for 2 minutes per
level.
If using an aerobic step – step at 20, 40 and 60 steps per minute (step on = 1 and step off =
1)
Note that the participant should be monitored for 5 minutes at each level and data collected
for the last 2 minutes to ensure they have reached equilibrium at that level.
2. Stop the recording between each exercise level to zero the respirometer pod and
analyse the gases from the Douglas bags
3. Enter the relevant data into the table (some will come from your calculations – see
below)
