Finished steel consumption in India increased at a CAGR of 5.2 per
cent between FY16 and FY20, reaching 100 MT.
In FY20P, India's crude steel and finished steel output grew to 108.5
MT and 101.03 MT, respectively
Following the Covid pandemic and the lockdown across the country,
Indian finished steel consumption reduced by 22% in March 2020 and
by 91% in April compared to the corresponding period in the last
year.
When the phased unlocking of the economy, the Steel sector has

GLOBAL STEEL POSITION OF INDIA
World’s Crude Steel production stood at 1864.0 MT during January-December 2020, down by 0.9%
over the same period of last year, based on provisional data released by the World Steel
Association.
India was the 2nd largest Crude Steel producer and recorded a decline of 10.6% in production
during this period as compared to the same period of last year.
