COMPARISON OF NUMBERS Rule (1): The number/numeral
having more digits is greater
Rule (2): When we have to compare
numerals with the same number of
digits
Start comparing digits from the left
hand side. If digits are the same then
compare the next values until we
come across with different digits at the corresponding places. The number with greater value of digit
will be considered as greater between two.
Ex: 53,78,345 > 73,456
7, 34, 599 > 7,34, 439
Exercise 1.3

(b) Which number is smaller - 36,945 or 36,954? : 36,945
NOTEBOOK WORK
2. Arrange the numbers in decreasing order

(a) 74,026 ; 76,024 ; 70,642: 76,024 > 74,026 > 70,642

(b) 1,88,315 ; 2,88,158 ; 1,88,351: 2,88,158 > 1,88,351 > 1,88,315
3. Arrange the numbers in increasing order

(a) 4,68,090 ; 66,900 ; 68,900 ; 6,89,921: 66,900 < 68,900 < 4,68,090 < 6,89,921
(b) 3,12,460 ; 4,12,360 ; 1,12,290 ; 4,41,290: 1,12,290 < 3,12,460 < 4,12,360 < 4,41,290
BOOK WORK

etc.
• For nearest 10, Check digit at ones place.
If the ones place is 5 or more than 5 we add 1 to tens place and replace ones place by
0.
If ones place is less than 5 then we replace ones place by 0, tens place remains
unchanged.
• For nearest 100, check the digit at tens place.
If the tens place is 5 or more than 5 we add 1 to hundreds place and replace tens and
ones place by 0.
If tens place is less than 5 then we only replace tens and ones place by 0, hundreds
place remains unchanged.
