Topic: Conflict Management Styles


Lesson: Watch video lecture 27 for the reference

Objective:
The objective of this assignment is to enable students:
• To learn about various conflict management styles and the situations in
which these styles are applied.
Learning Outcomes:
After attempting this assignment, the students will be able to:
• Understand the various conflict management styles and their real-life
implications.
• Distinguish between the different conflict management styles.

Conflict at the workplace usually gives people anxiety and stress and can leave
them drained and exhausted. Therefore, the importance of conflict resolution in
your workplace should never be taken lightly. Managing conflict well at the
workplace can help prevent an environment that breeds negativity, stress,
demotivation, and general employee unrest. There are different strategies that
we can use in conflict situations. Still, to effectively resolve a conflict, we
should use the most appropriate and suitable strategy for that particular conflict
situation.
Read the given situations and identify which particular conflict management
strategy is being used in each situation and analyze why it was appropriate to
use that strategy based on the importance of goals and importance of
relationship as explained (reference: lecture 27) (4 + 6 marks)
Situation 1:
Ahmed had been working with Karachi Electric Company for the past sixteen
years. Fahad was a recent hire, and he needed extensive training to perform his
job. While Ahmed was in the supervisory position and explained the work
processes to Fahad, Fahad shared an alternate to perform that task procedure
and argued about the current work procedures. Ahmed was entirely sure about
the need and the importance of the actual goal, so he abruptly asked Fahad to
stop arguing and told him to follow his instructions.
Situation 2:
In an advertising company, Mr. Rayan worked on a new advertising campaign
while a temporary employee Majid joined him for this campaign. Both were
together only for this project, and Majid had to return to his department in a
week. As they started working on that campaign, they disagreed on choosing
the best plan to be implemented and went into an argument while both were not
confident and focused on achieving the work goals. They also realized that it’s
a temporary work setting, and they will not have to bear each other forever.
They became louder and angrier as they tried to compromise on their
disagreement. Mr. Rayyan then decided to walk away and better ignore Majid.
Taking a break from that argument gives Rayan and Majid time to
independently think and work through the conflict.
