Nouns: Noun is a word used as a name of a person, place, animal or thing. Nouns
are also called naming words.

e.g. Zahid, Khalid, Lion, Peacock, Jeddah, India, Toys , Pen, Vessels

Proper Noun: A particular name of a person, place, animal or thing is a proper


noun. It always begins with a capital letter.

e.g. Zahid, Jeddah, Delhi, Starfish, Barbie accessories.

Common Noun: A general name for a person, place or thing.

e.g. boy, girl, city, animal, toys

Materials Needed :
 Student Chart
 Board to write on (or see )
 5 different tactile surfaces that can be glued on (cotton ball, sand paper, a penny,
soft
cloth, egg shell, whatever you can think of!).
Make group boxes of these objects for students to share.

 Glue
 Construction paper (enough for class)
 Objects falling under the various forms of nouns with different textures.
 Textures placed on a magnet (big enough for whole class to see)

Activities Tell the students: a fun activity might be to have the students look around their
classroom, and write down everything they see. Have each student read one or
more of their items out loud – most of these will be nouns. Next, have the students
organize these nouns into categories of “people, places, or things.”

Fun Activities: (25 mins)


Activity 1: Let the students play the ball game, ‘Naming Noun game’, where in
each student names the nouns that they see around them.

Let the above activity be followed by working on a Worksheet on Nouns.

Activity 2: Now let the students play the second game activity in pairs: ‘Name,
Place, Animal, and Thing’. Listing in the various Names, Places, Animals and
Things starting with the Alphabet said by the teacher. Ask the students to list the
words in the game as the Proper Noun and the Common Noun, thus getting the
lists of the two nouns. Preferably do the activity by playing silent Music, wherein
the students need to stop when the music stops thus concentrating on Time
Management too.

After the activity 2, let the students again work on the Worksheet on Common
Noun and Proper Noun.

Activity 3: Students finding out Common Nouns and Proper Nouns from
Newspaper (Fun time Newspaper for kids). Again play the music for 5mins and
once the music stops the students stop too.

Worksheet Practice : (20 mins)


Identify the Proper Noun (P) and Common Nouns (C) in the following
sentences :
1.            Ali and Allison are brothers. (P)

2.            My sister is very sweet.(C)

3.            New Delhi is the capital of India.(P)

4.            I have a dog as my pet.(C)

5.            Ayesha is a beautiful girl.(P)

List of Common Noun and Proper Noun :


Common Noun : man, city, festival, river

Proper Noun : Mohammad, Jeddah, Eid, Nile

Group Activity:

Magazine Picture and Word Search.

Ask students to Create a poster board, one half will be common nouns and one
half will be proper nouns. Have the students work in teams to cut out both words
and pictures that are classified as common nouns and proper nouns.

Interactive Noun Games

Animated lessons  on (Naming Words, Proper Nouns and Common Noun) that
offer an interactive way to learn the important grammar lesson is the best way to
speak in a correct fashion.

By the end of the lesson the students will be able to learn, understand and identify
Summary Nouns: Proper Noun and Common Noun, Singular and Plural Nouns correctly.
