Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to the TLE 10 – Technical Drafting Module on Drafting

electrical and electronic layout and details using CAD!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed
by its Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou
Concepcion A. Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig
through its mayor, Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized
the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential
Learning Competencies (MELC) in developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and

independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also
aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5
Cs, namely: Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and
Character while taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box
in the body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use

this module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while
allowing them to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to
encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

LESSON

LESSON 5: DRAFTING ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC LAYOUT AND

DETAILS USING CAD
LO5.1 DRAFT ELECTRICAL PLANS AND LAYOUT

LO5.1.15 SINGLE LINE RISER DIAGRAM

Electrical symbols can be used to represent various electrical

equipment. In an electrical diagram, electrical equipment is represented with
the help of electric symbols. Electrical drawings are usually drawn in a style
called ladder diagram and another form of drawing is a wiring diagram.
Electrical wiring diagrams use single lines from each device exactly as it
would be wired.

Wiring Electrical systems in buildings are usually divided into two

parts: service and branch circuits. Service parts include all the wiring and
apparatus needed to bring electricity into building. Branch circuits distribute
the electricity throughout the structure. Wire used in both service and branch
circuit is made of one or more strands of metal, either copper or aluminum
and covered with a flexible plastic insulation. The size of the wire used in an
electric circuit depends on the current to be carried by the circuit.
8

An electrical single-line diagram is a blueprint of the electrical system.

Creating a one-line diagram is the first step in preparing a critical response
plan, enabling electrical personnel to fully understand the layout and design
of the facility’s electrical distribution system.

Whether it’s a new or an existing facility, the single line diagram is the
road map for all future testing, service and maintenance activities. An effective
single line diagram will clearly show how the main components of an electrical
system are connected. It shows the correct power distribution path from the
incoming power source to each downstream load – including the rating and
size of each electrical appliance, its circuit conductors, and protection devices.

In many process facilities, loads are continually added or removed in

small increments. The net effect is not always seen until some part of the
system becomes overloaded or exhibits other problems. Many times, circuits
are added without appropriate modifications of the standard settings on the
associated upstream circuit breakers. The protective devices you use must be
coordinated with their time/current curves and with each other.
9

Benefits of Single Line Diagram (SLD)

• Helps identify when to perform troubleshooting and simplifies the

troubleshooting process;
• Accurate single line diagram will further ensure the safety of personnel
work;
• Identify potential sources of electric energy;
• Meets compliance with applicable building code regulations and
standards;
• Ensure a safer and more reliable operation of the facility.

Updating One-Line Diagram

From the electrical engineering and safety aspect, electrical SLD is the
main resource for calculating short-circuit currents, determining selective
protection coordination and ultimately calculating incident energy – making
it one of the most important safety documents available at the facility.

Modifications to the electrical system can present new hazards. For

example, changing a motor or transformer can create a greater fault current.
Over current protection devices that have been set at a certain level can fail
to work without warning.

Why is it important to have an updated electrical single line diagram?

___________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________

For an important reason, single line diagram needs to be updated from time
to time. How do you update yourself as a learner in this new normal to cope
up with the different technology tools?
