MODULE 2.1 | WEEK 12 – SECOND QUARTER: OCTOBER 18 – OCTOBER 22, 2021
ILLUSTRATING A RECTANGULAR COORDINATE SYSTEM

A. Illustrates the rectangular coordinate system and its uses.

1. I can define the Rectangular Coordinate System and other related terms.
2. I can plot the point on a coordinate plane.
3. I can give the coordinates of a given point on a coordinate plane.
4. I can use the coordinate plane to solve problems in daily life.

Historically, maps played a vital role for travelers and explorers. This map contains vertical and
horizontal lines called longitude and latitude, respectively. In this modern day, map applications and the Global
Positioning System (GPS) in your mobile phone still utilize the use of horizontal and vertical lines to give you
the exact location or coordinate of the place you are looking for.
In this lesson, you will learn the concept of Rectangular Coordinate System, plotting points, and
locating coordinates which may help you in understanding maps, distance, economics, research and other
daily activity.

CONCEPTS AND EXAMPLES

The Rectangular Coordinate System

The rectangular coordinate system is also called the xy-plane, Cartesian
coordinate plane, or simply, the Cartesian plane in honor of the French
mathematician. René Descartes (1596 – 1650), who is known as the “Father of
Modern Mathematics.” This discovery is an important tool used in geography,
navigation, statistics, economic, engineering, and sciences in general. Rene Descartes
PARTS OF RECTANGULAR COORDINATE SYSTEM

 Cartesian coordinate plane – is a plane formed by

the intersection of two number lines that are
perpendicular to each other.
 x-axis – the horizontal number line.
 y-axis – the vertical number line.
 Origin – the point of intersection of the two axes.
 Quadrants – two intersecting axes create four regions.
 Ordered pair – every point in the coordinate plane.
 x-coordinate/abscissa – the first number in an
ordered pair.
 y-coordinate/ordinate – the second number in an
ordered pair.

NOTE: Use capital letter to denote a point or an

ordered pair, and the ordered pair is enclosed by The Cartesian Coordinate Plane
parentheses wherein the order of the numbers is
important.

PLOTTING ORDERED PAIRS

From the origin, count left or right along the x-axis the number of units as indicated by the
abscissa. The positive abscissa is found on the right of the origin, whereas the negative abscissa is found
on the left of the origin. From this point, count up or down the number of units as indicated by the
ordinate. The positive ordinate is above the x-axis, whereas the negative ordinate is below the x-axis.
EXAMPLES

A. Plot the following points:

1. A (3, 2)

2. B (-1, 4)

3. C (-4, -2)

4. D (2, -3)

5. E (1, 6)

6. F (-3, -5)

7. G (6, -2)

8. H (0, 5)

9. I (-4, 0)

10. J (0, 0)
EXAMPLES

B. Determine the coordinates of the following points:

Solution:
1.A (4, 2)
2.B (-2, -2)
3.C (-3, 5)
4.D (0, -5)
5.E (-6, -3)
6.F (6, -1)
7.G (1, 6)
8.H (-5, 1)
9.I (3, 0)
10.J (3, -4)
