Knuckle Joint

Design Procedure
Consideration:
• No stress concentration.
• Load is uniformly distributed.

1. Failure of rod end in tension

P = stress . Area
π
P =σt . d2
4

The diameter ‘d’ of rod is determined

2. Failure of pin double shear

P= stress. Area
π
P=τ. d12 . 2
4

Find the diameter ‘d1’

Standard Relations:
d = d1 = selecting higher, d2= 2d, d3=1.5d,
t = 1.25d, t1 = 0.75d, t2 = 0.5d

3. Failure of single eye in tension

P= stress . Area

P = σt . (d2 − d1 ). 𝑡

Check the induced stress with permissible limit

The induced stress should be less than permissible stress.

4. Failure of single eye in shear

P= stress . Area

P = τ . (d2 − d1 ). 𝑡
Check the induced stress with permissible limit
5. Failure of single eye in crushing
P= stress . Area
P = σcr . d1 . t
Check the induced stress with permissible limit

6. Failure of forked end (double eye) in tension

P= stress . Area
P =σ . (d2 − d1 ). t1 .2
Check the induced stress with permissible limit

7. Failure in forked end in double shear

P= stress . Area
P = τ (d2 − d1 ) . t1 . 2
Check the induced stress with permissible limit

8. Failure of forked end in crushing

P= stress . Area

P = σcr . d1 . t1 . 2
Check the induced stress with permissible
limit

Standard Value:
d2 = 2 d3 = 1.5d

t = 1.25d, t1 = 0.75d , t2 = 0.5d
