SIMPLE PAST TENSE


Chapter - 22

Definition: The tense which shows the habit of past or the work that is done in the past is
known as simple past tense.

➢ The simple past is a verb tense that is used to talk about things that happened at a
specific point in the past and that is now finished.

Examples:
(a) I went to Australia last year.
(b) He won the silver medal.

In Simple Past Tense, helping Verb- ‘did’ is used.

• did: It is used with all the subjects.

➢ Structure for the positive sentence:


Sub+m.v(2nd form) + o+c

➢ Structure for the negative sentence:


Sub+h.v (did) + not + m.v (1st form) + o+c

➢ Structure for the interrogative sentence:


Q.W +h.v (did) + sub. + not + m.v (1st form) + o+c

Examples: (1) I ate my food.


(2) They took their medicines.
(3) My mother did not give me lunch in the evening.
(4) Why did you not do your work on time?
(5) Did all the students complete their homework.
(A):Fill in the blanks with the present continuous tense form of the verbs given in the
brackets.

(1) Lakshmi blew (blow) the whistle loudly.


(2) We visited (visit) the orphanage on Sunday.
(3) He helped (help) his sister with her homework.
(4) My husband cooked (cook) dinner last night.
(5) The police dealt (deal) with the criminal severely.
(6) The old man stayed (stay) at home and watched (watch) television.
(7) The nurse brought (bring) me a glass of water when I felt (feel) thirsty.
(8) The driver drove (drive) our car when we went (go) to meet father’s friends.

(B)-Make the following sentences negative:

(1) We spent our winter vacation in Bali.

(2) She heard the crash early in the morning.
➢ She did not hear the crash early in the morning.
(3) The teacher taught the lesson clearly.
➢ The teacher did not teach the lesson clearly.
(4) The baby wore lovely mittens.
➢ The baby did not wear lovely mittens.
(5) I hurt my knees while going to office.
➢ I did not hurt my knees while going to office.

(C)- Write questions to which the following may be answers. Begin your questions
with the question words given in the brackets:
