1.0 Purpose

1.1 This procedure serves as a guideline in chemical flushing of carbon steel pipes
internal to remove surface contamination by means of a chemical dissolution, most
typically by an acid solution.

2.0 Scope

2.1 Applicable to carbon steels piping system that requires chemical flushing.

3.0 References

3.1 Owner Specification

4.0 Equipment and Chemical

• Chemical Flushing Pump

• Filter

• Assorted flanges of required sizes

• Flushing hoses of various sizes and length

• Air compressor

• D1-96 rust remover

• D1-95 water-base anti-rust agent

5.0 Safety Requirements

5.1 Personal safety equipment such as rain gear, rubber boots, rubber gloves, safety
glasses and visor shall be used when handling chemicals.

5.2 All cleaning should be worked from top level down to each unit. Water flowing
down to the lower may hamper any job on going below. As such, lower level has
to be cleared prior to proceeding.

5.3 Working area shall be secured and necessary safety precautions shall be
maintained at all times.

5.4 Canvas around the pipe system and on the ground shall be placed to avoid any
spillage.

5.5 chemical flushing chemicals shall be transported in closed containers.

3
5.6 Appointed contractor shall complete permit obtained from MODEC Safety Officer
before transporting chemical on site.

5.7 Any chemical flushing works shall be highlighted in daily VSCC meeting and
agreed by the Project Manager before commencing.

5.8 Signboard “Danger Chemical Cleaning in Progress” shall be displayed on the

perimeter.

5.9 All chemicals from the washing down of the pipes shall be collected and disposed
in accordance to local rules and regulations.

6.0 General Requirements

6.1 Prior to proceed, the piping system shall be completed and pressure tested prior to
chemical flushing. Submit a package with P&ID drawings attached indicating the
inlet and outlet to Owner Rep.

6.2 System equipment such as pressure gauges, transmitters, flowmeters, valves

incompatible with chemicals, orifice plates, etc. shall be removed or isolated.

6.3 Connect flushing hoses and inline valves to flanges in accordance to the looping
diagram.
6.4 Connect the supply flushing hoses between the pump and the system piping at the
lowest elevation and return flushing hoses from the highest elevation.

6.5 Fill the piping system with fresh water.

6.6 Open all valves required for water circulation and start the flushing pump.

6.7 Check for any water leaks along the piping system and rectify if necessary.

7.0 Chemical Flushing Procedure

7.1 Oil, rust removal cleaning

7.1.1 Add in the cleaning water tank 25% (adjusting the concentration properly to the site
situation) DI-96 rust remover (which is neutral).

7.1.2 Circulate for 20 hours at room temperature. Use a wooden hammer to strike for
shocks along the pipeline regularly to make the scale come off more quickly.

7.1.3 Emptying cleaning liquid

7.2 Passivation in rinsing

7.2.1 Add 15% DI-95 water-base anti-rust agent in the cleaning water tank and clean the
pipeline repeatedly. Normally twice cleaning is carried out, in which the first takes

4
about 2 hours and the second takes the cleanness of filter paper surface as the
standard.

7.2.2 Check on regular basis for changes in filter paper. Filter paper is satisfactory when
no trace of foreign matter is found in appearance inspection.

7.3 Blow drying

7.3.1 Blow compressed air that is filtered and dry into the pipeline.

7.3.2 Remove the connecting flange at the low point of pipeline and empty all residual
liquid in it.

8.0 Inspection

Inspection will be carried out by customer to relevant technical requirements. After

inspection is satisfactorily made, the shipowner’s representative will confirm by signing and the
cleaning and passivation operation is completed.

9.0 Documentation

Upon completion of work, P&ID or isometric drawings (see attached drawing)showing

the extent of pickling and passivation shall be signed off by Owner Rep.
