A Housing project for elderly citizens that takes the the shape of a dense mat-building. The project
centres on the social and pragmatic needs of its elderly inhabitants, bringing in the rich urban
diversity of the city whilst maintaining a comfortable habitat for dwelling. Density and a variety of
functions are used to generate a diverse spatial and urban experience for the elderly inhabitants and
the surrounding suburb.
The increased in the numbers of elderly people in Songkhla province have raised awareness to the Songkhla Provincial Administrative Organization, leading to the
establishment of “Songkhla Elderly Day Care Center.” This is to raise the quality of life in Songkhla by providing full services on both the basic treatments and rooms to recover
from illness. The day care center also provides variety of activities for the elderly to participate, such as education and recreation. Furthermore, there is the provision of physical
therapy services to help the elderly return to their normal life.

Therefore, designers want this project to become the best day care center, both physically and mentally. This is also to encourage the elderly to take part in leisure
activities, as well as activities with family members, to promote other ways of interaction, which can deliver quality of life to people in society.
In the design of “Songkhla Elderly Day Care Center,” apart from taking into consideration of the architectural elements to meet the needs of the elderly, other reasons are, to
consider their state of mind and environmental and emotional issues, which could have impact on interactions between the elderly, family members, and their close relatives.
The location of the project is also adjacent to the canal and mangrove forest, enhancing the atmosphere and surrounding environments, making it look like picturesque, which
affects the interior of the building as well.

The idea is to design every elements of the project to be “friendly” to each other, both exterior and interior. The surroundings of this project consist of a tropical landscape,
and all types of users such as the elderly themselves, authorities, or close relatives to have supportive relationships. It is safe for all types of users, as it does not conflict with
the context of the site. This concept resulted in an interior space that is in harmony with the exterior and environment, including the use of color, materials, and layouts of the
building.
