Precautions and Administration of CIS

Compared to other interest inventories and schedules which are long, Comprehensive interest

Schedule requires only 10-15 minutes of the subject’s time. It can be administered individually

or also in group situations. It consists of a single sheet of paper in the form of a four page folder.

On the double inside page is printed a large rectangle divided into 14 rows and 14 columns. In

each of these 196 boxes, there is printed a pair of occupations and the subject is asked simply to

mark his preference in each box. The pairs of occupation are arranged so systematically that the

first item in ant column represents the same field. Similarly, the second item in any raw

represents the same field. The subject is asked to mark his preference in each pair. He is asked

to put a circle around both items in a pair if he likes both of them. If he dislikes both of them, he

is allowed to cross both of them. If he likes only one of the two items, he is asked to draw a

circle around that particular item only.

The administrator should closely follow the detailed instructions and illustrations of the

comprehensive interest schedule. Administrator should also see that the subject does not skip

anything and shows his preference clearly for each pair of occupation. No time limit is set, but it

should be pointed out to the subject that the results will probably be better if he works rapidly, as

first impression produces a truer picture of his likes and dislikes

The possibility of faking is always there in any psychological tests. Therefore the administrator

should remind the subject about the need to answer fast and without being more reflective. Time

limit in some extent helps to avoid faking.
