Backgroun You have been selected as a Front Office Assistant of a 5 star
d or Hotel. As part of your six months Probation you will undergo
Scenario on the job exposure in Accommodation Operations & handle
various situations which are typical to Hotel operations. On
successful completion of this period you will be deputed as a
Front Office Supervisor with independent responsibilities.
Keeping this in mind you should take a lot of initiative &
approach your assignments in an individualistic & creative

Ques 1. Select two renowned chains of hotels (one domestic & one International) and
trace its history right from the time of its inception. Also compare the facilities
offered by the hotel chains. Write your findings below. (PASS)

Taj Hotels

Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, founder of the Tata Group, opened the Taj Mahal Palace, a
hotel in Mumbai overlooking the Arabian Sea, on 16 December 1903. It was the first
Taj property and the first Taj hotel. The Taj group has since then developed and
flourished, under the Tata Group. In 1974, the group opened India's first international
five-star deluxe beach resort, the Fort Aguada Beach Resort in Goa. In 1970s, the Taj
Group also began its business in metropolitan hotels, opening the five-star deluxe
hotel, Taj Coromandel in Chennai, in 1974, acquiring an equity interest and operating
contract for the Taj President, a business hotel in Mumbai, in 1977, and also opening
the Taj Mahal Hotel in Delhi in 1978. The group has been converting royal palaces in
India into luxury hotels since the 1970s. The first palace to be converted into a Taj
luxury hotel was the Lake Palace in Udaipur, in 1971. In 1980, the Taj group opened
its first hotel outside India, the Taj Sheba Hotel in Sana'a, in Yemen and in the late
1980s, acquired interests in the St. James' Court Hotel in London. Concurrently with
the expansion of its luxury hotel chain in the major metropolitan cities, the Taj Group
also expanded its business hotels division in the major metropolitan and large
secondary cities in India. Ten hotels of the Taj group are members of the Leading
Hotels of the World.

JW Marriot

The JW Marriott brand was established in 1984, with the opening of the first hotel in
Washington, D.C. It was named as a tribute to J.W. Marriott, the founder of Marriott
Corporation. In 1989, Hong Kong was the destination for the overseas launch. Europe
and the Middle East followed in 1993. The JW Marriott Jakarta experienced terrorist
bombings in 2003 and 2009. In the 2003 incident, a car bomb explosion outside the
lobby killed 12 and injured 150, mainly Indonesians. Despite extensive damage, the
hotel reopened five weeks later. In the 2009 incident, a bomb in a small breakfast
room caused six deaths. An unexploded bomb in a guest room failed to detonate. As
a general guide within the Marriott hierarchy, the brand competes in luxury as below
Ritz-Carlton, but above the traditional Marriott and Renaissance.

Ques2. Explain how the Housekeeping department contributes towards earning


hotel revenue. Write your findings below. The findings should not exceed 10-15
sentences. Also, describe a standard room in a hotel, exhibiting the basic amenities
and facilities provided. (PASS)

Ans.Housekeeping have eyes for details which normal people don't.

The housekeeping department is one of the major departments in hospitality


industry. None would like to visit a place which is not clean and well maintained ,
everyone wishes to stay in a clean and hygienic ambience and hence here comes the
housekeeping department.
If the room is well maintained it automatically increases the aesthetical appeal of the
environment and hence helps in earning revenue.
The housekeeping department contributes towards earning hotel revenue by keeping
the hotel clean, fulfilling needs of the customers and keeping the customer satisfied
with the service. And the housekeeping department not only prepares tidy and
comfortable guestrooms on a regular basis for arriving clients, but also cleans and
maintains a certain quality of rooms in a hotel so that the surroundings look as fresh
as new and attract customers to stay longer or choose the services again in future.

Standard room : A standard room comes in the category of the hotel’s cheapest
room. It is a type of single room, which has a king-size bed, or as two beds — this
room is decorated with two queen-size beds. A standard room includes all kinds of
basic facilities such as a table, chair, desk, cupboard, dressing table, DVD player,
television, telephone, coffee maker and a private bathroom. Offerings other
amenities in the standard room also depend on the type of hotel.

Ques 3. You have prepared a layout of a standard room as per the current
scenario of the hotel industry. After analysing the guest supplies, amenities, décor
and cleaning standards, design a standard room for future.
