Content Standards
The learner demonstrates understanding of : world literature as source of wisdom in expressing and
resolving conflicts between individuals or groups and nature; strategies in evaluative reading, writing, listening,
and viewing; special speeches for occasions; and effective use of structures of modification and pronouns.
Performance Standards
The learner transfers learning by composing an argumentative essay in preparation for delivering impromptu
and extemporaneous speeches using affirmation/negation markers and appropriate prosodic features, stance,
and behavior.
I. Competencies
Reading Comprehension: Determine the personal significance of the selection to the reader (reader
response)
Literature: Recognize what a satire is
Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a. get meanings of words from context
b. answer comprehension questions correctly
c. analyze a character’s values and motivations
d. define and characterize a satire
e. relate the lessons learned in real life situations
Analysis
a. Direct the students’ attention to the character Don Quixote. Tell the students that “Quixote” came
from the word “quixotic” and it means imaginary or idealistic.
Abstraction
a. Introduce the students to Miguel de Cervantes. Check on students’ comprehension by asking the
following questions:
• How did Miguel de Cervantes learn courage, patience, and an understanding of the
strengths and weaknesses of the human being?
• Even without having read the book yet, how can you infer that Don Quixote is a good book?
b. Call the students’ attention to the vocabulary expressions which they need to “unlock” from the
text.
c. Have the students read the story silently. Check on comprehension by having them answer the
questions in Sharing Insights.
d. Explain to the students that the story is a satire.
• A satire is uses humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's
stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.
• Satire is a technique employed by writers to expose and criticize foolishness and corruption
of an individual or a society by using humor, irony, exaggeration or ridicule. It intends to
improve humanity by criticizing its follies and foibles.
e. Ask the students in what part or instances in their lives they can relate the lesson learned by Don
Quixote. Elicit answers from the students.
Application
a. Divide the students into four groups —one to characterize Sancho; the second group to describe
Don Quixote; a third one to assess the effectiveness of using satire to make people aware of
their follies; and a fourth group to talk about “windmills” in present society and the “Don Quixote”
who are trying to take apart these windmills.
b. Have the students write their work on a one fourth of manila paper.
c. Let the students present their work in class.
