The MPS “Complete Solution”

CR E-Glass Core – MPS uses “Boron Free” Corrosion Resistant E-Glass on all its insulators for its
High Electrical Integrity & High Resistance to acid corrosion. The Boron Free formulation of the
fiberglass core makes it resistant to Nitric Acid attacks. There has never been a brittle facture
failure of a CR E-glass insulator in over 30 years of use.

Silicone Rubber – MPS uses a Silicone formulation that has been utilized since 1984. The Si-O
Molecular Bonds (Inorganic Backbone of Silicone) are very stable and have Bond Strengths
higher than Sunlight, making the silicone resistant to UV degradation. In addition to providing
protection against ultraviolet radiation, electrical aging, and corona effect, silicone exhibits
hydrophobic properties; which provide excellent recovery characteristics to control leakage
currents in highly polluted or seacoast environments.
The MPS silicone rubber formulation has consistently outperformed other silicone formulations
in its hydrophobicity, its hydrophobicity recovery rate, and enhanced electrical properties in
contaminated environments

P-S-T End Fitting Seal – The P-S-T sealing system is a triple seal design with built-in redundancies.
Primary seal – rubber sheath compressed into chamfer of end fitting. Secondary seal – RTV
silicone applied to core / sheath / end fitting interface. Tertiary seal – Final external RTV seal
applied to sheath / end fitting interface. The P-S-T system has clearly shown its superiority to
withstand moisture penetration.

Stacked Shed – The MPS Stacked Shed configuration offers inherent protection against material aging in
critical areas of the sheath and resists the resultant material erosion when installed in highly
contaminated environments (resistance to Water Droplet Corona). In addition, stacked shed
profiles enhance the ability of the insulator to resist mechanical damage in these most critical
areas during transportation and installation.

Corona Rings for Suspension Insulators

High Voltages can result in unwanted noise (RIV)

and corona. To minimize the effects of corona,
coronar rings are applied to one or both ends of
the insulator (attached onto the end fittings).
Typically, for system voltages 230kV and above a
corona ring or combination of rings is necessary.
However, some applications may require rings at
lower system voltages. Refer to the Corona Ring
section of the Application Guide for detailed
information.

MPS corona rings are designed around the needs of the end user. It is easy to
install, unidirectional (not able to install in the wrong direction), and can be installed or
removed with hot stick tools. By making the ring a one piece design, we have
eliminated the problem of missing or lost parts. This was made possible by designing a
unique clamping mechanism that uses one captive bolt to secure the rinf to the
insulator. Additionally, the clamping section was designed such that the ring can only
be installed in one direction, which eliminates the problem of misapplied rings. As a
final step, the ring was designed with a split (opening) to allow installation with hot stick
tools.

Three Ring Diameters are available for use on all suspension insulator styles:
8” Ring, 12” Ring, and 17” Ring

For Insulators 230kV and above, MPS recommends use of Corona Rings. The
Application Table above depicts typical corona ring useage on MPS suspension
Insulators. For corona ring useage on special applications, environments, and
elevations; please contact MPS.

NAA100XH Series Station Posts

For Systems from…
69kV to 315kV
B.I.L.: 350kV --- 1050kV
• “A” End Fittings = 5” Bolt Circle w/ 4 tapped holes
• “P” End Fittings = 5” Bolt Circle w/ 4 through holes
• Class “100” = 2.5” Solid Rod
• HTV Silicone Rubber housing
• Meets or Exceeds the ANSI C29.9 Electrical requirements
• Tensile Strength = 17,500 lbs
• Torsional Strength = 32,000 in-lbs
• S1 = 12” Corona Ring (S0 = No Corona Ring)

Corona (grading) Ring: Recommended for most

applications with BIL ≥ 900kV. At lower voltages,
corona rings may be considered for areas of high local
contamination, and/or with altitudes > 3300 ft. Where
MPS considers them necessary, corona rings will be
included.

• Class “200” = 3.5” Solid Rod
• HTV Silicone Rubber housing
• HIGH STRENGTH
• Meets or Exceeds the ANSI C29.9 Electrical requirements
• Tensile Strength = 25,500 lbs
• Torsional Strength = 54,000 in-lbs
• S1 = 12” Corona Ring (S0 = No Corona Ring)

Adaptor Plate
To comply with ANSI standards on 7” Bolt Circle fittings,
MPS has adopted the use of 1” adapter plates 5”-7”
shown here. The top adapter plate, when needed, has
integral slotted holes to facilitate alignment during erection
of bus supports.

The use of adaptor plates increases the height of the

insulators by 1” or 2”. For retrofitting, it is possible to
adjust the total height to the original TR value.
