its association with adolescence, identity development is a continuous process that lasts into

adulthood and involves the formation of an identity within a wider and transitory cultural

environment. Identity refers to the characteristics, beliefs, personality, appearance, and

expressions that define a person or group. Identity is significant because it influences how

individuals perceive themselves and interact with others. There are aspects that influence the

development of one’s identity over time that determine how individuals perceive themselves.

influenced by society in a variety of ways. Society is the environment in which people absorb the

them. Society may influence knowledge and ideas by establishing norms

negative ways. Collectivism, or how people see themselves in relation to others in society, is as

essential as individualism. Finding a community that shares elements of their identity and either

accepts or changes how they identify themselves can assist them throughout their lives
