SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION
– Although the pile capacity calculated using the
helical piles design formulas was verified from
that load test (using the residual angle of friction
of the dilated sand), the pile movement was not
predicted and the pile movement at the allowable
design load = 1000 kN (based on safety factor
=3.0) was very high.
– Finite element methods should be used to model
the helical piles if the expected soil behavior
indicates dilation (dense sand and over
consolidated clays).
– The installation of helical piles has impact on the
soil stress state and accordingly stress path. This
effect should not be ignored in the design of
helical piles.
– The author suggests a further study on the
installation of helical piles in loose sand and
normally consolidated clays.
– The author suggests similar study to be done on
the different types of deep foundation ( driven
and bored cast in place piles).
