ன வ ச ம ெகா ைன க ெகா ட (ninadhu thiruvadi saththi
mayiRkodi ninaivu karudhidu buddhi koduththida) : (Oh Lord Muruga!) In order that I obtain
the knowledge to meditate on Thy hallowed feet, Spear, Peacock and Rooster, (I will offer
the following:)

ைறய அ ெச பழ அ ப க பா ேத (niRaiya amudhusey muppazham


appamu nigazh paal thEn) : bountiful sweet porridge, three kinds of fruits, sweet rice-cake
(appam), fresh milk, honey

ெந ய வைள இ ெகா ல க ற அ ப பவ எ ெபா (nediya


vaLaimuRi ikkodu laddugam niRavil arisi paruppu aval eL pori ) : long, twisted and circular
'muRukku', sugarcane, laddu, bright hued rice, pulses, rice flakes, sesame seeds, puffed
rice,

க கத க வ க இள (nigarilini kadhali kani vargamum iLaneerum ) :
matchless varieties of sweet plantain and tender coconuts

மன ம ெவா ெதா ட கர ெதா (manadhu magizhvodu thottaka raththoru) : (all such


offerings) are happily held by those gracious hands;

மகர சல ைவ த கர (magara chalanidhi vaiththa thudhikkara ) : the trunk kept in the


ocean filled with the 'makara' fish; refers to the story of Ganesha playfully using his trunk to
suck up and drink the entire milky ocean along with gods residing in it, and later spitting it
out. சல - the ocean. மகர – fish/marine life.

வள க க ஒ ைற ம பைன வலமாக (vaLaru karimuga otrai maruppanai valamaaga ) :


(I will) circumambulate (do 'pradakshina') of the elephant-faced god with a single tusk;

ம மல ைன ெதா ர ெசா ெகா (maruvu malarpunai thoththira soRkodu ) : I wish to


pay my obeisance by offering His favourite flowers and praising Him with appropriate words
of worship;

வள ைக ைழ ெதா பண ெடா (vaLarkai kuzhaipidi thoppaNa kuttodu ) : raise my


hands in salutation, hold my ears in 'thoppukaranam' and with the knuckles on my closed fist
strike my forehead;

வனச ப ர ெபா பத அ சைன மறேவேன (vanasa paripura poRpadha arcchanai


maRavEnE ) : and do 'archana' for the lotus-like feet embellished with anklets.

ெதனன ெதனெதன ெத ெதன ன பல ய அ பத ெமா உ ர ன (thenana


thenathena theththena nappala siRiya aRupadha moyththu udhirap punal) : Swarms of small
six-footed flies buzz making sounds 'thenana thenathena theththena' and infest over

ர உ சைத த ண ட ெச ைள (thiraLum uRusadhai piththani Nakkudal


seRimooLai ) : masses of flesh, intestines filled with bile juices and scattered pieces of brain

ெச ம உதர ர ெச ட (seruma udhara nirappu serukkudal) : densely filled


stomachs and intestines

ைரய அரவ ைற த கள ைட (niraiya arava niRaiththa kaLaththidai) : in the noisy battle


field,

த ம தள இட ைகக ெசகேசேச (thimidha thimithimi maththaLa idakkaigaL


jega jE jE ) : the drums boom "thimidha thimithimi"and the left-handed drums (called idakkai)
made the sound "jegajega jE"

எனெவ ெதன ஒ க க இ கஒ ழ ட (enave thuguthugu


thuththena oththugaL thudigaL idimiga voththu muzhakkida) : the trumpets and the hand-
drums together thunder the deep and reverberating "thuguthugu thuthu";

Osai) : the percussion instruments sounded like "dimuda dimudimu dittim"

இக அலைகக ைக பைற ெகா ட (igali alagaigaL kaippaRai kottida) : the satans fight
mutually and beat the drums with their hands;

இரண ப ர ந ட (iraNa bayiRavi sutru nadiththida ) : the devils go round


dancing

எ சரைர ெப இ ட ெப மாேள (edhiru nisichararai beli ittaruL perumaaLE) :


as you kill every demon who confront you.

Meaning

Oh my lord, you have valiantly fought the asuras and killed them in large numbers, filling the
battle field with corpses. In order that I remember your feet, peacock and rooster flag, I will
never forget to offer you rice, three types of fruits and always worship you with
Thoppukaranam and other forms of worship.
