PART I. Identification:  Which social science theory is referred to?  Write your answer on the

space provided.

1.     The overall health of society depends upon the healthy functioning of its

institutions.  Structural- Functional Theory

2.     Meanings that individuals give to symbols change over time. Symbolic Interactionist

Theory

3.     Faulty communication can result from differences in the perception of the same events

and symbols.  Symbolic Interactionist Theory

4.     Schools teach humanitarian attitude, altruism, democracy, civil rights, and other

positive aspects of society to preserve society and social order. Structural- Functional Theory

5.     When one institution fails to function another institution ought to come in to

perform the function for the stability of society.  Structural- Functional Theory

6.     A new society comes as a result of the resolution of clash between the powers

that be and the workers. Conflict Theory

7.     Two opposing sides are welcomed. This paves the way to change.  Conflict Theory

1.List the weaknesses of the Filipino character. Explain each in a sentence.

1. Extreme family centeredness

The padrino system exists because when a family member applies for a job, even

though he or she is unqualified for the position, he or she will be considered for the

employment.

2. Extreme personalism

Filipino people tend to give personal interpretations to actions they received from

someone.

3. Lack of discipline

They have goals and habits they want to achieve, but they prefer comfortable

laziness, rather than actions that require effort and time management.

4. Passivity and lack of initiative

It is a strong reliance on others that results in being complacent and a lack of

urgency.

5. Colonial mentality

It is a lack of patriotism, and someone who has a genuine fondness for foreign

things.
6. Kanya-kanya syndrome, talangka mentality

It is being selfish because of jealousy and feeling of rivalry against others,

particularly to someone who they think is better than them, and they tend to bring people

down.

7. Lack of self-analysis and self-reflection

Filipinos are easy to believe rumors without checking the facts or relying on

credible sources.

8. Emphasis on porma rather than substance

Filipino people are easily persuaded in what they see around them and in things that

are said to them without even checking the background of a person and seeing if it is true and

realistic.

2.  List the strengths of the Filipino then in a phrase or clause explain when that strength

becomes a weakness.

1. Pakikipagkapwa-tao

When people are taking advantage and abuse someone’s kindness.

2. Family orientation

A small decision runs by everyone.

3. Joy and humor

Being insensitive and not recognizing that there are situations that need to be

taken seriously.

4. Flexibility, adaptability and creativity

When a person has the "matiisin" feature, they are more easily oppressed and used

by the authorities.
5. Hard work and industry

Being hard-working at work often doesn't pay off.

6. Faith and religiosity and

Too reliant in saying “bahala na” rather than to take an initiative and do an active

action or response.

7. Ability to survive

When a person lacks self-reflection and coping mechanisms when confronted

with challenges.
