Method of assignment: The assignment is a group work (min: 2 persons per group; max: 3 persons per
group). No group presentation.

1.0 An Overview
The purpose of this design project is to develop the ability of the students to carry out a comprehensive
structural engineering design as practiced by the industry with minimal assistant. This project also will
develop the ability of the students to undertake problem identification and to find the solutions.

Design of ONE steel column.
Design of beam-column connections
(details of connections – please refer to
the detailed Figure P4).
Design of steel bracing – suggest your
bracing layout.
Note:
o Cover page should state course code, course title, name of a group member and matrix number –
zero marks will be given for those whose names are not included in the project submission.
o Marks will be given based on the correctness of the calculation.
o Any missing data may be assumed with proper justification.
o Foundations need not to be designed.

The building is to be constructed on a site in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur (GPS location: 3.120560,
101.727220). The client’s requirements are as follows:
Steel material is used for main structural frames: beams and columns.
The floor is cast in-situ concrete slabs of 150mm thick.
The roof is to be used for M&E equipment.
Fire resistance is 2 hours and the protection is achieved with a sprayed in tumescent
coating.
The site conditions are as follows:
Basic wind speed is 15m/s based on 3 sec gust.
Ground: Existing ground to 3m = made ground with rubble and clay.
Below 3m = stiff clay, SPT = 35N to 50N
No ground water.

10. Assessment Strategy:
Report – will be evaluated based on instructions given in 3.0 above. Marks will be
given based on the correctness of the calculation and the presentation of the
project paper. Total mark for report is 100 marks.
Work done – per evaluation will be used. Each member of the group will evaluate
him/herself and also other group members. Each member needs to fill up Team
Member Evaluation Form (see Form P-1) and submit attach to the report. Total
mark is 25.
