Programme: Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Honours)

Course Code & Course Name: BEC 304 Steel and Timber Design
Assignment: Project Design
Assessment: 30%
Lecturer: Mohd Nizam Shakimon
Method of assignment: The assignment is a group work (min: 2 persons per group; max: 3 persons per
group). No group presentation.
Deadline: DAY TWO AFTER STEEL DESIGN FINAL EXAM

1.0 An Overview
The purpose of this design project is to develop the ability of the students to carry out a comprehensive
structural engineering design as practiced by the industry with minimal assistant. This project also will
develop the ability of the students to undertake problem identification and to find the solutions.

2.0 You are required to:

o Analyse the Structural steel FRAME using ROBOT STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS ( free licence for
students from Autodesk.com)
o Design the structural steel framework using ROBOT and manually.
o Write or type your answer neatly and clearly.
o Show all calculation and design procedures in calculation sheets.

3.0 Task : To prepare a Technical Report according to the following format:

Task Description Page
1. Introduction  Background of the project.
 Brief the key elements of your project,
including a statement of the problem, the
2-3
aims and objectives of your project.
 State the scope of work and limitations, if
any.
2. Design Data.  Design parameters.
 Design Loads 2-3
 Materials – Hot Rolled Steel sections
3. Structural Design Criteria  Design procedures.
2-3
 Design criteria to be considered.
4. Analysis & Design Analyse using ROBOT. No limit
Design using ROBOT and manual calculation.
Your manual calculation should consist of the

1
following:
 Design of ONE steel beam.
 Design of ONE steel column.
 Design of beam-column connections
(details of connections – please refer to
the detailed Figure P4).
 Design of steel bracing – suggest your
bracing layout.

Compare your BEAM AND COLUMN design

with the results from ROBOT. Make further
discussion for any differences.
5. Conclusion Summing up the members sizes, the
2-3
connections, etc. Use appropriate TABLE.
6. Detailing Detailing of the following – you extract the
results from ROBOT for the following:
 Layout of floor plan (include the size of

beams, columns)
 Beam –column connections (choose any
two locations). Scale 1:20
7. Reference Any related sources. No Limit
Limit your
Report format: Font 10 (Arial) / Single Spacing pages up to 60
only.

Note:
o Cover page should state course code, course title, name of a group member and matrix number –
zero marks will be given for those whose names are not included in the project submission.
o Marks will be given based on the correctness of the calculation.
o Any missing data may be assumed with proper justification.
o Foundations need not to be designed.

4.0 Structure Description

This four-storey office building is shown Figure P.1. It is a structural steel framework (see Figures P.2
and P.3). The floors and roofs are supported by open web steel beams and columns. The floor slabs are
to be a cast in-situ concrete of 150mm in thickness and further check needs to be done on lateral
movement of the beams. The beam-column connection is designed to have simple connections hence
allowing a nominal amount of moments. See Figure P.4.

2
The building is to be constructed on a site in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur (GPS location: 3.120560,
101.727220). The client’s requirements are as follows:
 Steel material is used for main structural frames: beams and columns.
 The floor is cast in-situ concrete slabs of 150mm thick.
 The roof is to be used for M&E equipment.
 Fire resistance is 2 hours and the protection is achieved with a sprayed in tumescent
coating.
The site conditions are as follows:
 Basic wind speed is 15m/s based on 3 sec gust.
 Ground: Existing ground to 3m = made ground with rubble and clay.
Below 3m = stiff clay, SPT = 35N to 50N

 No ground water.

10. Assessment Strategy:

 Report – will be evaluated based on instructions given in 3.0 above. Marks will be
given based on the correctness of the calculation and the presentation of the
project paper. Total mark for report is 100 marks.

 Digital presentation will be evaluated as follows:

Task Comments Point Achieved

1. Software  Types of software used
/5
(staadpro or prokon)
2. Presentation  Modelling of the
/10
structure
3. Run Analysis  Any errors? /3
 Any warnings? /2
 Can RUN? /5
Total = /10
Total marks = /25

 Work done – per evaluation will be used. Each member of the group will evaluate
him/herself and also other group members. Each member needs to fill up Team
Member Evaluation Form (see Form P-1) and submit attach to the report. Total
mark is 25.
