Method of statement for GRP Pipe & Fitting Repair work

GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) Pipes & Fittings (Flange) have high mechanical strength; however
the material tends to leak due to following reasons.

1. If GRP piping system is subjected to impact, Leak will start to occur.

2. Break and cracks at knuckle radius of flange due to over torque while tightening the bolts.
3. Insufficient curing of Butt& wrap Lamination Joints of pipe and fitting.

However, performing GRP pipe leak repairs for small diameters can be easily done following the
below repair methods

Surface Preparation of Affected Pipe & Fitting Section.

 Before performing any repair works, it is necessary to shut off or reduce the pipeline
pressure and temperature as much as possible for pipe leak repair.
 The surface at which leakage happening shall be rough and clean.
 It is necessary to prepare the pipe surface roughness to approximately 60 microns by
grinding.

Butt & wrap Lamination of effected Pipe & Fitting Section.

 Apply CSM/WR Hand lamination, to the pipe section, when performing pipe wrapping, the
fiberglass should start at least 100mm before the leak area.
 Wrap CSM/WR on the pipe as tightly and evenly as possible, pulling with sufficient strength
during each round of wrapping.
 Apply with at least 20% overlap and ensure that the wrapping thickness and length of
repair shall be 10mm and 300mm respectively.
 It is advisable to alternate subsequent Layers of CSM and WR in layup sequence to attain
maximum strength.
 Layup sequence: M-M-WR-M/M-WR-M-WR-M/M-WR-M-M
 Here M:CSM (Chopped strand mat) , WR (Woven roving)
 The butt & wrap procedure mentioned in Rectification methodology can be followed here.

Inspection of Repair

Allow the repaired area to be cured for 3 to 4 hours, once repair job is completed and the repaired
system can be operated back to normal operating conditions.
