1.0 STATEMENT OF WORK

This Method Statement describes the provision of piling works for concrete spun
pile performed for project Menaiktaraf Jambatan FT001/724/5 Merentasi Sungai
Kerian Dan Membina Jejambat Merentasi Persimpangan Jalan Persekutuan Ke
Jalan Transkrian FT001/FT283, Seberang Perai Selatan, Pulau Pinang under
Besteel Engtech Sdn Bhd. This Method Statement shall describe the method of
works, procedure and inspection to be carried out by the appointed Subcontractor.

2.0 REFERENCES

This method statement shall be read together with the following document: -
 Contract specification
 Approved Construction Drawings
 Applicable codes and standards

3.0 RESPONSIBILITIES

The Subcontractor shall carry out the site preparation, stabilization of working
platform and survey works for the pile setting out. The Main Contractor, Besteel
Engtech Sdn Bhd shall handover site complete with the access to bridge site,
earthworks platform level, shall do supervision and verification in order to ensure the
works are done in accordance to the required specification.

4.0 PLANT & EQUIPMENT

1) 1 no of Piling Rig – to execute the piling works as described in the work

program, will be increased if require to catch-up with the work program.
2) 1 no of 35 Ton Crawler Crane for unloading and shifting materials
3) Backhoe for the general prepare, repair and make-good the working
platform to facilitate the movement of piling machines and
loading/unloading the piles within the working platform.

5.0 SEQUENCE OF WORKS

5.1 Piling Works

a) Before proceedings with any piling works, the setting-out of piles position
will be carried-out by the surveyor, accurate in accordance to the designed

Engineer’s drawing. The control point to be taken from the given reference
or base line and datum levels on site that agreed by the Design Engineer.

b) The pile shall be placed on the pegged point and two offset points (OP) shall
be marked on the ground to control and to check the alignment of the pile,
immediately after placing in position and before start driving. (Refer to
following sketch)

c) Pile shall be installed vertically or raked a specified rake angle and

installation shall be within a maximum acceptable tolerance. No forcible
method of correction of pile position will be permitted during the process of
driving. The hammer blows per 0.5 meter run of penetration shall be
counted and recorded on the pile driving record sheet.

d) Sitting and positioning hammer height of 300mm to 600mm height shall be

employed for the first few meters of pile driving before employing full
height of hammer drop of 1100mm for the rest of driving.

e) The pile shall be driven to set using a hydraulic driven hammer weight of 9
tones for spun pile 600 mm diameter. Control driving by adjusting the
hammer drop shall be employed when hard or very dense layer of soil
encountered. Drop height of hammer shall not be less than 1100 mm (during
set) as specified by the Engineer. (Note: Drive to set shall generally mean minimum
setting for the last 10 nos. of hammer blows is 15 mm penetration into ground).

f) The welding joint details shall be as shown in detail of the construction

drawing or/and shall be as per the manufacturer specification. The pile’s
butt welds joint to be painted with protective coating and allowed to be
cooled before driving resumes.

g) The whole process of each pile shall be precisely recorded in Piling Driving
Record sheet attached in the procedure.

5.2 Cutting Off Spun Piles

a) Installed pile shall be cut-off for pilecap construction. For cut off level
below original ground level, excavation work will be executed until 50mm
below soffit of pilecap level to allow laying of 50mm lean concrete.
b) The pile cut off level is then be set out by the surveyor, extended around the
circumference of the pile by wrapping a flexible gasket band around the pile
at the cut off level and marked with a marker.
c) After marking the pile cut off level around the pile, the pile will be cut with
the spun pile cutters. The spun pile cutter shall be slowly moved around the
circumference of the spun pile and apply pressure to cut into the body of the
spun pile. In the process the concrete and reinforcement bars will be cut.
d) Water is added to prevent overheating of the cutting blade and to reduce the
amount of air borne cement dust. (Some blades no need watering process.)
e) After the spun pile completely cut, the cut off section will be transported to
our onsite storage yard. At the storage yard the spun pile will be broken
down and dispose off as hard core. The reinforcement cages will be dispose
off as scrap.
f) After cutting off to the required cut off level, the pile top level and
eccentricity will be taken and recorded.

6.0 INSPECTION & TESTING

The inspection procedure shall be governed by the contract specification and related
codes standards.

Request for Inspection shall be issued at least 12 hours before the works
commenced. Result of the inspection shall be recorded in the Survey Report.

7.0 ENVIRONMENTAL & SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

The Project HSE procedures and regulations shall be complied with. Site personnel
must be in proper safety working attire e.g. Safety boots and helmet must be worn
at all times.

Hazard identification audit to be carried out before start work each day and/or every
new task.

The significant impacts to environment during concrete spun pile:

 Impact to water quality due to piling works in term of sediment affecting
downstream of river
 Contaminants contain fuel and oil waste will be polluting the soil

 Noise pollutant due to machinery used
 Air quality impact due to dust pollutant from the activity

Extra precaution to prevent pollution:

 Water quality monitoring will be conducted at a frequency of once a month
 Oil and grease is prohibited from being disposed on site or discharge into
any water courses
 Oil waste shall be collected in drums, sealed off and labelled properly and
disposed off site by licensed contractor
 Reduce noise pollution should be done to all machineries through proper
maintenance
 Use sprays water or sprinkles to earth surface to control dust released and
stop from spreading

Way of method to prevent pollution towards:

a) Waste and Pollution

Fuel: Machinery operator will refuel (diesel oil) plant and equipment from approved
storage facilities. Refuelling will be completed at the designated areas.

Plant Maintenance: Any essential plant maintenance required while on site will be
undertaken either at the working area or at a designated bunded area as directed by
site supervisor.

Environmental officer will provide a spill kit in the form of absorbent mats and pads
to soak up any accidental spillage during refuelling or plant maintenance work. These
will be bagged up and disposed of. Should there be any cause of pollution to the water
courses the main contractor will be informed immediately.

Drip trays will be used under small plant items at all times.

b) Noise and Vibration

Based on related standards that provide details of anticipated noise and vibration
levels anticipated for proposed plant and equipment. Actual site levels may vary from
those stated depending on actual ground conditions and the degree of exposure at the
work location. Noise and vibration monitoring will be carried out during the
installation of the pile.

c) Water courses
