or other article. 7
Hem is the edge of a piece of cloth or clothing which has been turned under and
sewn. 8
Pre-treating of fabric to wash and dry your fabric exactly as you plan to wash
and dry your finished garment. This will pre-shrink the fabric and will remove any
excess dyes. 10
Pressing of fabric Iron out any wrinkles and make sure you’re using a
temperature that is suitable for your fabric.11
.
Putting fabric on grain is laying out and/or manipulating fabric to return to it's true
form- making the warp and weft yarns lie perpendicular to each other. This is an
important step in preparing your fabric.12
Right side of a fabric is about the "printed" or "pretty" surface of the fabric
while in the wrong side of a fabric, the design is sometimes visible on the
wrong side of the fabric, but it will be more faded than on the right side. 14
Seam allowance (sometimes called inlays) is the area between the fabric edge
and the stitching line on two (or more) pieces of material being sewn together.15

INTRODUCTION
The first lesson in Module 4 -Sewing of Household Linens is “Prep Fabric Before
Drafting a Pattern”. Everyone knows that fabric plays a critical role in what your finished
garment will look like.21 New fabrics from the store have been treated with dye and sizing
chemicals. There are also fabrics that is colour fast, shrink a lot, and will soften when
laundering. Prepping them before cutting is especially important if you want your garment
to fit and drape like a dream and is free of chemicals.22
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to learn the importance of fabric
prepping, the three steps of fabric prepping and the four methods on how to put the fabric
on-grain.
LESSON PROPER/INFORMATION:
In fabric prepping, there are three steps you need to do, they are:
1. Pre-treating/Wash and dry your fabric
2. Pressing/Ironing your fabric
3. Put your fabric on-grain.
Pre-treating is washing and drying as you plan to wash your finished garments for
the purpose of pre-shrinking and removing the excess dyes and chemicals in the fabric.23
But there are some fabrics that frays a lot so making a zigzag stitch at the cut ends will
help to lessen the fraying of the fabric. 24
Pressing is the removing out of any wrinkles in your fabric while making sure that
you are using a temperature that is suitable for your fabric. Fabrics that are wrinkle-free
are much easier to lay-out the draft pattern. 25
Pre-treating and Pressing the fabric are the easiest things to do in fabric prepping.
Putting your fabric on-grain is a bit complicated however, it is the most important task you
should not ignore or else your finished project will go to waste.
26
There are 4 methods on how to do this:
https://katrinakaycreations.com/3-things-you-need-to-do-before-you-cut-your-fabric/
And the fourth and final way of putting your fabric on-
grain – if all three of these ways don’t work – is to just drape it
and do it by eye. Now this is the least accurate way of putting
your fabric on grain, but if you’ve tried the three previous
methods and they don’t work for your type of fabric, this is the
method that you’ll have to use. You’re going to line up your
selvages with your right sides together, hold up your fabric, and
drape it until it drapes straight up and down. Now you may need
to shift one selvage over so that you don’t get those waves in
the bottom, but that’s what you want to do.
https://www.cucicucicoo.com/2016/03/why-fabric-drape-is-so-important/
Below are statements about step 1 and 2 of fabric prepping. Read and understand
them carefully. Identify whether it is True or False. If you agree to the idea, write TRUE
but if you disagree with the idea, write FALSE. Get your TLE6 Test notebook for your
answer sheet.
_____1. Pressing the fabric helps to remove the folds and wrinkles for easy
measurement.
_____2. Pre-treating is important because there are fabrics that tend to shrink when
getting wet.
_____3. Removing excess dyes in the fabric can be achieved by means of pre-ironing.
_____4. Before you begin pressing your fabric, make sure to set the temperature of the
electric iron according to the type of fabric.
_____5. Cottons and wools can withstand a higher temperature, whereas synthetic
fabrics and silks require a lower temperature.
Listed below are the procedures on how to do the 1st method of putting the fabric
on-grain. What you will do is put the numbers 1-5 on the spaces provided to arrange the
procedures into consecutive order. Write your answers in your TLE6 test notebook.
_____ A. Tear the fabric from one selvage all the way to the next selvage.
_____ C. Take out one to two threads from the cutting edge of the one side of the selvage.
_____ D. Use your two hands to hold the fabric starting from the cut.
_____ E. Pull the threads from the top all the way to the bottom.
This is the 2nd method of putting the fabric on-grain. Below is a PROCESS
DIAGRAM. Inside the boxes are steps on how to do the clipping methods but these steps
are INCORRECTLY arranged. To answer this task, copy the rearrange contents of the
diagram from step 1 to 5 on your TLE6 notebook but make sure that it is organize
according to its correct chronological order.

your teacher the next task you need to perform/accomplish.
Introduction
The advantages of drafting a pattern when sewing are: It minimizes the chances
of any fault during cutting on the fabric; correct estimate of the required materials can be
made; correct drafting minimizes the chances of any fitting problems; basic draft can be
adapted to make a variety of designs; pile fabrics are easy to cut when a draft had been
prepared; and it minimizes the chances of fabric wastage. 28
Since your project for household linen is a pillowcase, the simplicity in drafting a
pillowcase using a pattern paper/brown paper for the draft will be optional. However, if
the drafting is to be done directly on the fabric, it should be pre-shrunk and ironed and it
should be done on the wrong side of the fabric.
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to use and follow the steps in drafting
a pattern and to draft your own pattern for your project, which is a household linen.
LESSON PROPER/INFORMATION:
In making a draft for your pillowcase, you will need the following tools, the
Measuring Tools (tape measures, tailors’ square and ruler), the Marking Tools (pencils,
tailor’s chalk and tracing wheel), the Cutting Tools (dressmaker’s shears) and the
Pinning Tools (pins).
The Steps in Making the Draft for an Envelope Pillow Case are as follows:
1. Prepare the needed tools and materials.
2. Take the measurement of the pillow. Add 1” width for easy insertion.
3. Mark the measurement in the pattern paper or wrong side of the fabric by putting dots
and x.
4. Add 1” allowance for the width in both sides for the seam of the front and back piece.
5. For the length, add 2 ½” for the front piece and 5 ½” for the back piece to allow for a
nice 4" flap.
6. Use a tailored chalk and a ruler in forming the shapes and designs.
7. Cut the drafted pattern paper with a scissor.
Assuming that the size of your pillow case project is 26” x 16”. The finished draft
of your pattern will look like this:
1” seam allowance
17”width
Front
and flap
Back

Read and understand the following questions. Write your answers in your TLEHE6
Test notebook.
1. How many inches will be added on the width of the pillow for easy insertion?
2. How many inches of allowance for the width is added for each seam of the front and
back piece?
3. How many inches will be added for the length of the back piece?
4. What are the marks we need to put in the pattern paper?
5. How many inches will be added for the length of the front piece?
Arrange the steps in drafting a pattern for your pillow case by writing 1 -5 on the
space provided. Use your TLEHE6 Test paper for your answer.
______Add 1” allowance for the width in both sides for the seam of the front and back
piece.

INTRODUCTION
In this lesson Sewing Household Linens, you will learn how to sew creative and
marketable household linens to augment family income and assess the finished products
as to the quality using rubrics.
Since you already know how to draft a pattern for the pillowcase, the kinds of
tools/information sheets that the previous modules presented, and you were reminded
with the safety precautions while sewing household linens, you are now ready to sew
creative and marketable household linens as means to augment family income. This
lesson will discuss more about sewing creative and marketable household linens as
means to augment family income and assess the finished products using rubrics. In this
manner you are required to carefully study the procedure in doing an envelope pillow
case using French seam and assess the finished products based from the criteria
reflected in the scoring rubrics.
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to identify the different stitches, seams
and hem in sewing as well as how to sew an envelope pillowcase using French Seam as
a project in “Sewing a Household Linen” with the steps/procedure you will learn in this
module.
LESSON PROPER/INFORMATION
In order for you to acquire the skills, look at the pictures of different sides of the
fabric, stitches, seams and hem that you can encounter as you go along the procedures
in making the project, as follows:
2. Stiches
3. Seams
4. Hem
Now, read the steps in sewing the envelope pillowcase using French seam.
Pictures are also provided for you to follow:
1. Lay-out and trace the 2 patterns, 16” x 23” and 16” x 28” for front and back pieces
the pillow case in the cloth. Provide seam allowance for each hem of the length
measuring ½” and another 1”.
2. Give 1” seam allowance for the two widths and the length of each piece.
3. Begin by sewing the hem in one side at the front and back pieces of the length.
Fold the edge of the front and the back pieces ½” and another 1” inward, pin-baste
to press and sew it using running stitch.
4. Next, fold the hem of the longer piece 5” and pin it. Be sure that the wrong sides
face each other. Do not sew for this will be your flap.
5. To attach the front and the back pieces of the fabric, lay the pieces making the flap
at the center of wrong sides. Make sure the hem of the front and the flap of the
back are on the same side.
7. Next, do the French seam. Sew ½” along the edges from the right to the left of
each side using plain seam. Do not sew the side of hem and the flap. This will be
the opening of the pillow case.
8. Then, cut ¼” from the ½’ sewn edges making sure that the straight stitches are
safe.
9. Turn the fabric inside out. Press the sewn edges especially the corners and put
pins to flatten.
10. Lastly, sew again the edges for a nice French seam.
