TECHNICAL TERMS
(Vocabulary List)

For clarity and understanding, the following terms are defined:

Household linens are items made of cloth, such as tablecloths, sheets, curtains
and pillowcases that are used at home.1

Fabric or cloth is cloth or other material produced by weaving

together cotton, nylon, wool, silk, or other threads. Fabrics are used for making
things such as clothes, curtains, and sheets. 2

Plaids is a fabric with stripes or bars of various colors and widths that cross at right
angles. 3

Selvage the edge of woven fabric finished so as to prevent raveling, often in

a narrow tape effect, different from the body of the fabric. 4

Drape to arrange (a garment, cloth, etc.) artistically in folds or hangings.5

Stiches A loop of thread or yarn resulting from a single pass or movement of the
needle in sewing, knitting, or crocheting.6

Seams are line along which two pieces of fabric are sewn together in a garment
or other article. 7

Hem is the edge of a piece of cloth or clothing which has been turned under and
sewn. 8

Fabric Prepping or prepping your fabric is the pre-treatment of garment before

cutting. 9

Pre-treating of fabric to wash and dry your fabric exactly as you plan to wash
and dry your finished garment. This will pre-shrink the fabric and will remove any
excess dyes. 10

Pressing of fabric Iron out any wrinkles and make sure you’re using a
temperature that is suitable for your fabric.11
.

Putting fabric on grain is laying out and/or manipulating fabric to return to it's true
form- making the warp and weft yarns lie perpendicular to each other. This is an
important step in preparing your fabric.12

TLE 6 – HOME ECONOMICS – MODULE 4

Drafting Pattern is the process of creating a pattern or an outline by taking

measurements from a person, form, or model, in order to create a foundation,
which is a pattern used as the basis for the design. This pattern or outline is
known as Draft, which is then transferred on to the cloth to be cut. 13

Right side of a fabric is about the "printed" or "pretty" surface of the fabric
while in the wrong side of a fabric, the design is sometimes visible on the
wrong side of the fabric, but it will be more faded than on the right side. 14

Seam allowance (sometimes called inlays) is the area between the fabric edge
and the stitching line on two (or more) pieces of material being sewn together.15

Sewing the crafts of fastening or attaching objects using stitches made with a
needle and thread. 16

Envelope Pillow case has a special envelope closure at the end of the case,
so the pillow is tucked in and out of sight for a more finished look when making
up the bed. is an extra sheet of fabric at the opening of the pillow case for the
purpose of hiding the pillow.17

Safety Precautions is an action taken in advance to protect against possible

danger, failure, or injury. 18

Sewing tools are instruments that aid in accomplishing a sewing task. It can be
manipulated by hands. 19

Sewing Area/Room is a room set aside for sewing. 20

Module Title/Topic/Lesson 1: Week 4. Module 4 / Sewing of Household Linens/

Prep Fabric Before Drafting a Pattern, Day 1

INTRODUCTION

After completing Modules 1, 2 an 3 of Grade 6 TLE – Home Economics, you will

study now Module 4 about “Sewing Household Linens”. It is understood that the basic
information about drafting pattern for household linens will be based from the
information acquired.

The first lesson in Module 4 -Sewing of Household Linens is “Prep Fabric Before
Drafting a Pattern”. Everyone knows that fabric plays a critical role in what your finished
garment will look like.21 New fabrics from the store have been treated with dye and sizing
chemicals. There are also fabrics that is colour fast, shrink a lot, and will soften when
laundering. Prepping them before cutting is especially important if you want your garment
to fit and drape like a dream and is free of chemicals.22

At the end of the lesson, you are expected to learn the importance of fabric
prepping, the three steps of fabric prepping and the four methods on how to put the fabric
on-grain.

LESSON PROPER/INFORMATION:

In fabric prepping, there are three steps you need to do, they are:
1. Pre-treating/Wash and dry your fabric
2. Pressing/Ironing your fabric
3. Put your fabric on-grain.

Pre-treating is washing and drying as you plan to wash your finished garments for
the purpose of pre-shrinking and removing the excess dyes and chemicals in the fabric.23
But there are some fabrics that frays a lot so making a zigzag stitch at the cut ends will
help to lessen the fraying of the fabric. 24

Pressing is the removing out of any wrinkles in your fabric while making sure that
you are using a temperature that is suitable for your fabric. Fabrics that are wrinkle-free
are much easier to lay-out the draft pattern. 25

UBANTE, QUIDOLES, MILLARES 13

TLE 6 – HOME ECONOMICS – MODULE 4

Pre-treating and Pressing the fabric are the easiest things to do in fabric prepping.
Putting your fabric on-grain is a bit complicated however, it is the most important task you
should not ignore or else your finished project will go to waste.
26
There are 4 methods on how to do this:

The first method, which is the easiest thing to do, is

to cut across your selvage and tear from one selvage all
the way to the next. Now to ensure that your fabric is torn
across the crosswise grain, you’re going to take out one
or two threads and pull them from the top all the way to
the bottom. As long as they go all the way down, you know
that it’s exactly on the crosswise grain. If your thread pulls
out a little bit earlier, then you shift over a few inches, clip
again, and tear again.
http://www.american-doll-outfitters.com/grain_line.html

If you’re fabric doesn’t tear, the second way of

putting your fabric on-grain is to clip across the selvage –
clip across the selvage, pull the fabric out, and hold on to
one or two of the crosswise grains. While holding onto
that, gently push your fabric along the crosswise grain.
You’ll see a little gather and a line. And once you’ve done
that, from one selvage all the way to the other, you’ll just
cut on that line with your scissors. So if your fabric doesn’t
tear, you’re going to cut across the selvage and push
across the crosswise grain.
http://basicsewingtips.blogspot.com/2010/09/putting-fabric-on-grain.html

If you’re working with a fabric that has a visible

crosswise grain, such as this plaid, you can cut along the
visible grain. However, you have to make sure that the
grain has been woven in. So this plaid is actually made
from cream and navy and red threads. You want to make
sure that you’re not doing this on a fabric where the
pattern has just been printed in place – in which case, it
could have been printed off grain.

https://katrinakaycreations.com/3-things-you-need-to-do-before-you-cut-your-fabric/

UBANTE, QUIDOLES, MILLARES 14

TLE 6 – HOME ECONOMICS – MODULE 4

And the fourth and final way of putting your fabric on-
grain – if all three of these ways don’t work – is to just drape it
and do it by eye. Now this is the least accurate way of putting
your fabric on grain, but if you’ve tried the three previous
methods and they don’t work for your type of fabric, this is the
method that you’ll have to use. You’re going to line up your
selvages with your right sides together, hold up your fabric, and
drape it until it drapes straight up and down. Now you may need
to shift one selvage over so that you don’t get those waves in
the bottom, but that’s what you want to do.

Below are statements about step 1 and 2 of fabric prepping. Read and understand
them carefully. Identify whether it is True or False. If you agree to the idea, write TRUE
but if you disagree with the idea, write FALSE. Get your TLE6 Test notebook for your
answer sheet.

_____1. Pressing the fabric helps to remove the folds and wrinkles for easy
measurement.
_____2. Pre-treating is important because there are fabrics that tend to shrink when
getting wet.
_____3. Removing excess dyes in the fabric can be achieved by means of pre-ironing.
_____4. Before you begin pressing your fabric, make sure to set the temperature of the
electric iron according to the type of fabric.
_____5. Cottons and wools can withstand a higher temperature, whereas synthetic
fabrics and silks require a lower temperature.

Subject/Grade/Component: Grade 6 TLE – Home Economics

Competency: 2.1.1 steps in drafting pattern TLE6HE-0d -8

Module Title/Topic/Lesson 1: Week 4, Module 4/Sewing of Household Linens

Day 2

Introduction

Today’s lesson is a continuation of Module 4, lesson 1. Since we are done with

the fabric prepping, it is time to begin with the steps in drafting a pattern for your
household linen project.

Drafting Pattern is the process of creating a pattern or an outline by taking

measurements from a person, form, or model, in order to create a foundation, which is
a pattern used as the basis for the design. This pattern or outline is known as Draft, which
is then transferred on to the cloth to be cut. 27

The advantages of drafting a pattern when sewing are: It minimizes the chances
of any fault during cutting on the fabric; correct estimate of the required materials can be
made; correct drafting minimizes the chances of any fitting problems; basic draft can be
adapted to make a variety of designs; pile fabrics are easy to cut when a draft had been
prepared; and it minimizes the chances of fabric wastage. 28

Since your project for household linen is a pillowcase, the simplicity in drafting a
pillowcase using a pattern paper/brown paper for the draft will be optional. However, if
the drafting is to be done directly on the fabric, it should be pre-shrunk and ironed and it
should be done on the wrong side of the fabric.

At the end of this lesson, you are expected to use and follow the steps in drafting
a pattern and to draft your own pattern for your project, which is a household linen.

UBANTE, QUIDOLES, MILLARES 20

TLE 6 – HOME ECONOMICS – MODULE 4

LESSON PROPER/INFORMATION:

In making a draft for your pillowcase, you will need the following tools, the
Measuring Tools (tape measures, tailors’ square and ruler), the Marking Tools (pencils,
tailor’s chalk and tracing wheel), the Cutting Tools (dressmaker’s shears) and the
Pinning Tools (pins).

The Steps in Making the Draft for an Envelope Pillow Case are as follows:
1. Prepare the needed tools and materials.
2. Take the measurement of the pillow. Add 1” width for easy insertion.
3. Mark the measurement in the pattern paper or wrong side of the fabric by putting dots
and x.
4. Add 1” allowance for the width in both sides for the seam of the front and back piece.
5. For the length, add 2 ½” for the front piece and 5 ½” for the back piece to allow for a
nice 4" flap.
6. Use a tailored chalk and a ruler in forming the shapes and designs.
7. Cut the drafted pattern paper with a scissor.

Assuming that the size of your pillow case project is 26” x 16”. The finished draft
of your pattern will look like this:

1” seam allowance
17”width

2 ½” seam 26” length 5 ½” seam

Day 4

INTRODUCTION

One of the components in Technology and Livelihood Education is Home

Economics. You, as a grade six pupil, will learn the skills in this area which you can use
in your daily living and can be a source of income in the future.

In this lesson Sewing Household Linens, you will learn how to sew creative and
marketable household linens to augment family income and assess the finished products
as to the quality using rubrics.

Since you already know how to draft a pattern for the pillowcase, the kinds of
tools/information sheets that the previous modules presented, and you were reminded
with the safety precautions while sewing household linens, you are now ready to sew
creative and marketable household linens as means to augment family income. This
lesson will discuss more about sewing creative and marketable household linens as
means to augment family income and assess the finished products using rubrics. In this
manner you are required to carefully study the procedure in doing an envelope pillow
case using French seam and assess the finished products based from the criteria
reflected in the scoring rubrics.

At the end of the lesson, you are expected to identify the different stitches, seams
and hem in sewing as well as how to sew an envelope pillowcase using French Seam as
a project in “Sewing a Household Linen” with the steps/procedure you will learn in this
module.

LESSON PROPER/INFORMATION

In order for you to acquire the skills, look at the pictures of different sides of the
fabric, stitches, seams and hem that you can encounter as you go along the procedures
in making the project, as follows:
