Introduction:

Sewing equipment are different tools used in garment construction. The skilful
use of the different sewing equipment will help us take body measurement and
drafting pattern with accuracy and speed.
Success in sewing calls for the right tools at the right time. All tools must be
appropriate in a proper order and you must know how to use them to save time and
produce best result.
To develop your skills in sewing you have to make sure that all the things you
need for sewing are within your reach. Prepare your sewing tools before you start
working to save time and make things easier. Avoid borrowing; this is not a good
habit. Your sewing kit should contain the necessary measuring, marking, cutting tools
and sewing aids.
This module will provide you knowledge and skills of the different tools and
equipment which are necessary in sewing. A complete set of sewing tools and
equipment classified according to their uses are presented to help your work faster
and easier.

Let us read and Learn:

A. MEASURING TOOLS - are the tools used in taking a measurements

accurate. Measuring tools is necessary to come up
with the desired finished product.

1. TAPE MEASURE – is a 60-inch measuring tool

used for taking body measurements to produce well-
fitting clothes and pants. This is usually made of cloth
or plastic.

2. RULER - this comes in woo, plastic, or metal use to

measure and draft lines on a fabric or pattern.

3. GAUGE - is a movable marker that measures short distances

and correct thickness such as distance between buttons,
pleats, and hems.

4. FRENCH CURVE - this is a curved cardboard

used for drawing curve lines like the arm’s eye,
neckline, and crotch.

B. MARKING TOOLS - are required for transferring pattern markings to garment

fabric pieces and for making alterations on garments.

ASIAO 11
TLE 6 – HOME ECONOMICS – MODUL 2B: SEWING HOUSEHOLD LINENS

1. TAILORS CHALK – This is hard square wax used to mark

fabric. It comes in different colors and does not leave
permanent marks.

2. DRESSMAKER’S CARBON or TRACING PAPER – placed

between the pattern or design paper and the fabric. The
pattern or design is traced with a tracing wheel. The
dressmaker’s carbon can also be used for decorative
stitches.

3. TRACING WHEEL – is used for transferring stitch lines or

seam allowances from pattern to fabric. This is made up of
small spiked wheel attached to a plastic or wooden handle.

4. SOFT PENCIL – used in pattern construction. It makes

dark marks that can be easily erased when errors are
made.

C. CUTTING TOOLS - are instruments that serve well if properly maintained.

Sharp cutting tools make clean cuts and well-defined notches and they do not
damage fabric. On the other hand dull tools slow the cutting process, and make
your hand and wrist tire easily. Sewing cutting tools should not be used for other
household task. Must be sharpen regularly and oiled occasionally for better
usage.

1. SEWING SHEARS or SCISSORS – small pair

of scissors used for cutting notches, clipping
curves and snipping threads.

ASIAO 12
TLE 6 – HOME ECONOMICS – MODUL 2B: SEWING HOUSEHOLD LINENS

2. DREESSMAKING/FABRIC SHEARS – a large pair

of scissors design to cut fabrics. It keeps blades
sharp. Do not use it to cut papers or other non-
fabric materials.

3. PINKING SHEARS. These scissors have saw-

toothed edge rather than straight blade. They are
used to prevent cut fabric edges and seams from
unravelling.

D. PINNING and SEWING TOOLS are the basic tools in sewing such as:

1. HAND NEEDLES – needles are made of fine steel. Their

points are sharp and the eyes are smooth and well-
polished. Sold in variety of sizes; lower numbers indicate
larger needles.

2. SEWING MACHINES NEEDLES – they come in assorted

sizes that allow you to work with different fabrics. The
smaller the number the finer the needle.

3. PINS – are used to hold pieces of fabric together when

sewing or cutting fabrics. Like needles, they are made
of stainless steel. They also vary in sizes.

4. THREAD – sold in balls or spools, carrying 50, 70, or 100

yards. Used to sew fabrics. This comes in different colors
and should match the fabric for which it will be used.

ASIAO 13
TLE 6 – HOME ECONOMICS – MODUL 2B: SEWING HOUSEHOLD LINENS

5. NEEDLE THREADER – helps to pull the thread

through the eye of the needle.

6. SEAM RIPPER – has a pointed and a curved end used to undo

stitches and slash buttonholes.

7. PINCUSHION and EMERY BAG – The pincushion

is usually filled with wool, sawdust, or hair filling. Its
covering can be made of velvet, felt, or wool fabric.
This permits the pin to slip in and out of the cushion
while the emery bag is a small bag usually attached
to the pin cushion for convenience. It is good for
polishing needles and pins and is filled with fine sand
or fine ground glass.

8. THIMBLE – is a cap-like object made of metal or

plastic that is worn over the finger, usually, the middle
finger, to protect it from being pricked by the needle or
pin when hand sewing.

cardboard box with dividers.
2. Keep the needles and pins in the pin
cushion or emery bag for safety.
