Lesson Time: 60 minutes
Activity types: note taking, group discussion, Generating Knowledge, 3 (volunteer) presentations
Activity:
• After reading The Outsiders, instructor will post a mini lesson and overview in Canva of themes in the
60’s.
• Students will then choose to work individually or with a partner to create a Timeline displaying
specific events in real life, that were taking place during the setting of the book.
• Students will be allowed to use photos, and videos, and specific text to convey their knowledge
• Students will save the Timeline as a PDF

• Individually, students will work on a one paragraph summary of the text based on one of the events
they chose to include in their timeline.
• Summary will be turned into teacher at end of lesson.
• Instructor will provide feedback

Reflective Practice: The created lesson idea provides students the opportunity to not only create a resource
for their own use, but for the classes use. This activity requires students to recall specific details from the text
to create their assignment. It also gives them an opportunity to freely create by putting events of their choice
on the timeline. Each student will be asked to then explain why they chose the events they did, and the
assignment will also serve a great purpose as a study tool for them later on. Students also have the option to
print out their timeline for display as well.
