Leadership is influencing people –by providing purpose, direction, and motivation –

while operating to accomplish the mission and improving the organization.

Educational Leadership
Is a term applied to school administration that strive to create positive change in
educational policies and processes.

Who is a Leader?
•A person who leads or commands or guides a group or an organization or a country to
achieve predefined objectives.

•A leader by its meaning is one who goes first and leads by example, so that others are
motivated to follow him.

•A person must have a deep-rooted commitment to the goal, will strive to achieve it
even if nobody follows him.
Nature of Leadership
(1) Leadership as a Status Group:
It refers to a situation where a person moves to leadership position by reason of
heredity (as when he is a descendant of a business family), or when he is elected or
selected to a leadership position.

(2) Leadership as a Focal Person:

According to this view, leadership vests the people who are regarded as leaders by
virtue of positions held by them in an organization, such as persons elected or selected
to positions of directors, executives, administrators, managers, or chiefs of
departments in an organization.

(3) Leadership as a Function:

The leadership function comprises activities that facilitate the achievement of group
goals. The person who performs this function is regarded as leader.

(4) Leadership as a Process:

According to this view, leadership is an interactive process in which leaders and
followers exchange influence.

Elements of Leadership
1. Communication
Leadership starts with communication. Effective communication is clear, transparent
and customized to the recipient.

2. Knowing Your People

A good leader knows his or her team better than anyone else.

3. Knowing Yourself
It’s not only important to know your team; it’s important to know yourself.

4. Democracy
If you’re simply telling people what to do, you’re not going to have engaged workers,
and your results will probably suffer, too.

5. Seeking Out Feedback

It’s hard to do an honest self-assessment so regularly ask for feedback—not only from
your team, but other managers, mentors and other colleagues as well.

Leadership Theories

Leadership theories are schools of thought brought forward to explain how and why
certain individuals become leaders.
The theories emphasize the traits and behaviors that individuals can adopt to boost
their own leadership abilities.

1. Great Man Theory According to the Great Man Theory (which perhaps be called
the Great Person Theory), leaders are born with just the right traits and abilities for
leading –
-They have charisma, intellect, confidence, communication skills, and social
skills.

-The theory suggests that the ability to lead is inherent –that the best leaders are
born, not made.

2. The Trait Theory is very similar to the Great Man Theory. It is founded on the
characteristics of different leaders –both the successful and unsuccessful ones. The
theory is used to predict the effective leadership.
-Trait theory try to identify leadership characteristics from different perspective.
They focus on the physiological, weight, and height; demographic such as age,
education, and familial background; and intelligence.

3. Contingency theory- Fiedler's contingency theory is one of the contingency

theories that states that effective leadership depends not only on the style of leading
but on the control over a situation.
- It is founded on the principle that no one leadership style is applicable to all
situations.

- Famous leadership researchers Hodgson and White believe that the best form of
leadership is one that finds the perfect balance between behaviors, needs, and
context.
4. Situational Theory - It proposes that no one leadership style supersedes others.
As its name suggests, the theory implies that leadership depends on the situation at
hand.

5. Behavioral Theory - The focus is on the specific behaviors and actions of leaders
rather than their traits or characteristics. The theory suggests that effective leadership
is the result of many learned skills. Individuals need three primary skills to lead their
followers —technical, human, and conceptual skills.
