What is Evidence- Based Practice?

Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) is a process involving the examination and application of

research findings or other reliable evidence that has been integrated with scientific theories. It
requires that decisions about health care are based on the best available, current, valid and
relevant evidence. These decisions should be made by those receiving care, informed by the tacit
and explicit knowledge of those providing care, within the context of available resources.

5 steps of Evidence Based

Practice

1. Ask a question: Converting the need

for information (about prevention,
diagnosis, prognosis, therapy,
causation, etc) into an answerable
question.

2. Find

information/evidence to answer question: Tracking down the best evidence with which
to answer that question.

3. Critically appraise the information/evidence: Critically appraising that evidence for its
validity (closeness to the truth), impact (size of the effect), and applicability (usefulness
in our clinical practice).

4. Integrate appraised evidence with own clinical expertise and patient’s preferences
Integrating the critical appraisal with our clinical expertise and with our patient's unique
biology, values and circumstances.

5. Evaluate: Evaluating our effectiveness and efficiency in executing Steps 1-4 and seeking
ways to improve them both for next time

GUIDELINES FOR EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE INFOGRAPHIC POSTER

PRESENTATION
1. SIZE. The presenters shall personally layout
the infographic poster. Shall limit the size of the
entire infographic to 27.94cm x 43.18cm (Tabloid).

2. COLLEGE LOGO, TITLE AND AUTHOR. College logo should be placed at the topmost
part of the poster with designated college and department. Below is the title EBP
presentation, author names, and the Institution/department.

3. TEXT LETTERING. Use font size and style that can be read easily. For the title, font size
must 16 (Bold), author names font size is 14 (Bold). Font size for the main contents of the
infographic and the subtitles (Example: Introduction, Problem, Evidences, etc.) must be 12.
Infographic posters should not give a long presentation but should stimulate discussion based
on the format given below. Use pictures, images, and graphic design to convey message of the
EBP.

Example:

Department of Nursing

Topic:

Patient Compliance to Drug Treatment.

Arleen E. Monterde1, Joanna Cel T. Tojino1.

(Author Names)

4. TEXT COLORS. Good two-color combinations are black and white background. Plain
background is easiest to read. The presenter has the choice of the background color of the
poster. When choosing background colors just make that the text lettering is still readable.
Paper Presentation Format

I- Introduction
(This will provide background and rationale for the study. Introduce the topic interestingly
giving the background situations, circumstances, factors that set the stage for inquiry)

II- Problem
(This will state the specific nursing practice which you encountered in the clinical area that
needs to be investigated. This is stated in an interrogative question.)

Objectives
1.

III. Evidences

Search and appraise at least five (5) evidences or studies related to the problem. The findings
of previous literature may either support or contrast with each other. These evidences should
recent at least the last five (5) years. You will appraise the literature by determining the
strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Each claim and findings should be supported
by literature. Provide citation for each statement.

Research Study Objectives Findings

4.
5.

Topic: The effectiveness of mobile health (mHealth) project in increasing patient compliance to
drug treatment.

Strengths refer to the characteristics of an evidence as to its advantage over others.

Example: Decreases referral time and care costs burden to patients due to transportation,
overcome communication delays, ensure real-time data acquisition and reporting, reduces
data losses and monitor data quality, makes available pre-define indicators and reduces
delayed reporting.

Weaknesses refer to characteristics of an evidence as to its disadvantage relative to others.

Example: Unclear benefits, uncertain long-
term results and effectiveness (e.g.
insufficient results from RCTs), and unclear cost-benefit analysis, difficult to monitor text
messages content, high possibility of data underreporting, and possibility of biased responses
from participants.

Opportunities refer to condition in the evidence that could exploit to its advantage. It arises
when it takes benefit of the condition in its environment that enables it to become more
valuable.
Example: Potential to enhance timeliness in reporting health and stock data in rural and
remote areas.

Threats refer to condition in the evidence could be an obstacle or may cause trouble
Example: mHealth results are dependent of external factors (e.g. long duration of patient
treatment may reduce adherence and motivation to participate), costs of mHealth
implementation may affect patient treatment costs

Strengths Weaknesses

- Decrease referral time (Gutierrez, - Difficult to monitor text messages

2017) content (Ching, 2015)
- Decrease care cost burden (Acosta,
2014)
Opportunities Threats

- Enhance timeliness in health reporting - Cost of mHealth implementation (Cruz,

(Dela Cruz, 2017) 2015)

IV- Answers to the Problem

Provide scientific answers to the problem statement

V- Conclusion
Conclude findings. Usually these are the answers, solutions or directions to the problems and
hypotheses. This leads to generalization based on findings.

VI- Recommendation
Give functional and realistic suggestions based on the findings and conclusions. Be specific
about what and why a future study should be done. Stick your recommendation from what
your data spoke.
VII- References
Use the APA format in citing the source of literature.

VIII- Appendices
(This will be the compilation of evidences used. This will be attached in the last part of the
EBP paper. This will not appear in your poster presentation)
