Intended Learning Outcomes

• ILO1. Discuss ICT concepts, principles, and

theories in various teaching-learning
processes.
• ILO2. Select digital and non-digital learning
resources in reference to the student learning
preferences.

The Importance of ICT in Education
•Today we do not need to go any
further than our own home or even
room, to see some form of ICT in our
lives. Whether it be a computer,
plasma TV, or mobile phone, we all
have them in some part of our lives.
In today’s society, people as
consumers of ICT, all strive for the
one dream – the dream of a
connected life.

WHAT IS A TEACHING AND
LEARNING PROCESS?

These are combined processes

where an educator assesses learning
needs ,establishes , specific learning
objectives, develops teaching and
learning strategies, implements, plan
of work and evaluates the outcomes
of the instruction .

3 Modes of Flexible Learning
• Online- A flexible learning mode that is electronic-based, and

which uses available online classrooms for the delivery of

instruction

• Offline – A flexible learning mode that does not use internet

connectivity at all. Learning is done through printed modules or

uses digital forms such as video and audio placed in storage

devices

Insert Running Title 6

• Blended – A type of flexible learning, which is a

combination of online and offline modes. Online

technology will be used for delivering lessons, while

other classroom activities will be done offline using

printed modules, videotapes, storage devices, and

learning packets.

Additional concepts and terms of ICT
systems as they apply to teaching-
learning
•Teaching becomes rewarding when
learners get the most from instructions as
manifested in their academic
performance and success. Teachers
should be able to match specific
curriculum standards to particular
teaching and learning materials, as well
as software packages and computer
applications.

• Technology – A mix of processes and products used in the
application of knowledge. It includes tools from pencil and
paper to the latest electronic gadgets and tools for practical
tasks
• Information and Communication Technology Literacy or ICT
Literacy – The use of digital technology, communication tools,
and/or networks to access, manage, integrate, evaluate, create,
and communicate information to function in a knowledge
society
• Educational technology – The use of technology in teaching
and learning. It includes both nondigital (e.g., flip charts,
pictures, models, realia, etc.) and digital (e.g., electronic tools,
hardware, software, and connections, etc.).

Insert Running Title 11

• Digital Learning – Any type of learning that is accompanied by

technology or by instructional practice that makes effective use of

technology. It encompasses the application of a wide spectrum of

practices which include blended or virtual learning. It can come as

online or offline which utilizes digital technology.

• Productivity tools – Any type of software associated with

computers and related technologies that can be used as tools

for personal, professional, or classroom productivity. Examples:

Microsoft Office, and Adobe Acrobat – A family of application

software and Web services developed to view, create,

manipulate, print, and manage files in Portable Document

Format (PDF)

Ten principles for using ICT in education

▪ Principle 1: Use ICT to achieve education and development goals.

▪ Principle 2: Use ICT to enhance student knowledge and skills.

▪ Principle 3: Use ICT to support data-driven decision making.

▪ Principle 4: Include all short- and longer-term costs in budget

planning.

▪ Principle 5: Explore technology alternatives to find appropriate

solutions.

• Principle 6: Focus on teacher development, training, and
ongoing support.

• Principle 7: Explore and coordinate involvement of many

different stakeholders.

• Principle 8: Develop a supportive policy environment.

• Principle 9: Integrate monitoring and evaluation into project

planning.

• Principle 10: “It takes capacity to build capacity”

Theories in various
teaching and
learning

Behaviorism ( skinner’s)

•Behaviourists consider learning to be a

mechanical process of ‘association’ of
response with a stimulus for producing a
new behaviour, i.e. learning. They also
emphasize the need for ‘practice’ for
strengthening the association so that the
newly acquired behaviour can be
performed with speed as well as
efficiency, and gains the strength of a
habit.

Cognitivism (Jean Piaget)

•Cognitivism does not view learning as a

mechanical process but a process of
thinking cognition for meaning making.
Mental processes like memory,
reasoning, organizing ideas, making
strategies for acquiring facts and
concepts are needed for such learning
and this requires the consideration of the
entire field of operation.

•For the modern educationist, education is
much beyond memorizing facts and
performing fixed operations. It is
‘metacognition’ which refers to the ability
to understand and manipulate cognitive
process through questioning, planning,
regulating thought and thus perform
critical thinking.
