LECTURE NO. 6 – PLANTING AND TRANSPLANTING

MACHINERY
The objective of planting is to place seed in the soil, obtain
good germination and stand without having to replant.

Seed germination is influenced by so many factors such as

seed-related, soil and seedbed, seeder, weather, moisture,
machine operator-related factors, etc.
Manual Broadcasting is the common method of crop
establishment where seeds are thrown over a broken soil and
covered with soil through minor manipulation.

Planting equipment is any power-operated device used to

place seeds, seed pieces, or plant parts in or on the soil for
propagation and production of food, fiber and feed crops.
Classification of Planting Equipment:
1) Row-crop planters
1.1 Trailing (drill, hill-drop, narrow-row)
1.2 Rear-tractor mounted (drill, hill-drop,
transplanters or plant setter)
2) Broadcast-crop planters
2.1 endgate seeders
2.2 narrow and wide-track and weeder mulcher
2.3 airplanes
3) Grain drills
Row-crop planters – are designed constructed to plant seeds
in rows far enough apart to permit cultivation of the crops.
Many of this machine are designed to plant one type of crop,
while some are adapted to plant more than one crop.

Transplanters are equipment for placing growing plants or

plant parts in the soil.
Parts of a planter:
1. Furrow opener – make a furrow
2. Metering device – meter the seeds
3. Seed tube – deposit the seeds
4. Furrow closer- close the furrow

Broadcast Seeders are machines used to sow seeds, it is
more accurate and rapid than by hand. Broadcast planters
drop the seed on the surface of the soil and do not have
covering attachments. If covering is desired, the seeds are
covered by harrowing.
Parts of tractor driven broadcast seeder are the hopper, a
feeding device, and distributing wheel.
Drill Seeders /grain drill – these are machine designed and
built to place seeds of small grains and grasses in the ground
in narrow rows spaced 15 to 20cm (6 to 8in) apart a uniform
depth.
Principal parts are the main frame, transport and drive
wheels, seed box, metering device, furrow openers, and
covering devices
Mechanical Rice Transplanter – is a machine designed and
built to transplant young rice seedlings.

Advantages:
1. Seedlings are transplanted at optimal age (14-18 days).
2. Uniform spacing and optimal plant density.
3. Less transplanting shock, early seedling vigor and
uniform crop stand.
4. Lower stress, drudgery and health risks for farm laborers
5. better employment opportunities
6. Increases farmers’ net income
Types of Mechanical Transplanter:
1. Riding type
2. Walk behind type

According to type of seedling used:

1. Root-washed seedling type
2. Soil-bearing seedling type
According to size:
1. 2 or 4 rows walking behind models
2. 8- row riding type model

According to source of power

1. Engine driven
2. Manually driven
