d. A is false but R is true.

11. Assertion (A): A proton and an alpha particle having the same kinetic energy are moving in circular paths

13. Assertion (A): The torque on the coil is maximum when the coil is suspended in a radial magnetic field.
Reason (R): The torque tends to rotate the coil about its own axis.

Reason (R): Magnetic flux direction is independent of the direction of current in the conductor.

Answer questions 16-20 based on the following case study:

A galvanometer can be converted into voltmeter of given range by connecting a suitable resistance Rs in series
with the galvanometer, whose value is given by
Rs =
where V is the voltage to be measured, Ig is the current for full scale deflection of galvanometer and G is the
resistance of galvanometer.

The series resistor (Rs) increases the range of the voltmeter and the effective resistance of the galvanometer. It
also protects the galvanometer from damage due to large current.
A voltmeter is a high resistance instrument and it is always connected in parallel with the circuit element
across which potential difference is to be measured. An ideal voltmeter has infinite resistance. In order to
increase the range of voltmeter n times the value of resistance to be connected in series with galvanometer is Rs
= (n - 1)G.
Based on the information given above, answer the following questions:

16. 10 mA current can pass through a galvanometer of resistance 25 . What resistance in series should be
connected through it, so that it is converted into a voltmeter of 100 V?
i. 0.975
ii. 99.75
iii. 975
iv. 9975
17. There are 3 voltmeter A, B, C having the same range but their resistance are 15,000 , 10,000 and 5,000
respectively. The best voltmeter amongst them is the one whose resistance is
a. 5000
b. 10,000
c. 15,000
d. all are equally good
18. A milliammeter of range 0 to 25 mA and resistance of 10 is to be converted into a voltmeter with a range
of 0 to 25 V. The resistance that should be connected in series will be
a. 930
b. 960

Class 12 - Physics

Solution

1. (b) (n - 1)R0
Explanation: For a range V, the current flowing is I, and V = IR0
If a resistance R is connected in series, the range of the voltmeter increases to nV.

nR0 = R0 + R
R = (n - 1)R0

2. (d)

Explanation:

or

or

or
3. (d)
Explanation: I = = q frequency
Now, q = 100e = C
So, I = = A
Given: r = 0.8 m

Thus, magnetic field is

Explanation: Current,

5. (b) accelerate charged particles or ions to high energies

Explanation: Cyclotron is a particle accelerator, which uses electric field to accelerate the charged
particle and magnetic field to make it move in a circular path. During acceleration in the electric field,
the particle acquires high energies of the order of a few million electron volts.
6. (c)
Explanation:

7. (c) 4B
Explanation: Magnetic field due to coil is directly proportional to no. of turns and inversely
proportional to radius. As radius become half and no. of turns gets doubled, so magnetic field gets 4
times.

Thus,
The force acts along the positive z-axis.

14. (d) A is false and R is also false
Explanation: If a charged particle is entering in a perpendicular electric field, then the force on

or

It means,
or = 1 i.e., r1 = r2
i. e., paths of electron and proton will be equally curved.
15. (c) A is true but R is false.
Explanation: The direction of the magnetic field due to the current-carrying conductor can be found
by applying the right-hand thumb rule or right-hand first rule. When an electric current is passed
through a circular conductor, the magnetic field lines near the centre of the conductor are almost
straight lines. Magnetic flux direction is determined only by the direction of the current.
