INTRODUCTION

“Architecture is the correct and magnificent play of forms brought together in

light.”

-Le Corbusier

There is no vision without light work of an Architect or Interior Designer cannot

be seen without light. Adding a significant amount of light can make the shape of
the Architecture, Colors of materials visible but not clear to vision. But a tactful
Design of Lighting can reveal the beauty of its Form and the precise color and
texture of the materials. Lighting plays an important role the way people feels,
experience or understand the space. It unifies other elements of the space. Whether
the building is naturally lit or artificially lighting plays an important role in the way
the work is perceived. It draws the attention of the people to the important features.

The lighting designer Richard Kelly expressed this when he said, “Visual beauty is
perceived by an interplay of light. It is therefore of first importance to plan lighting
whether creating a new structure, altering an old or making existing conditions
tolerable. By the judicious and artful control of [light] you can make an imagined
water-color rendering become the real thing, become your idea of the beauty of
architecture or decoration.
Light [can] make it easier to see, make surroundings safe and reassuring and
stimulate the spirit to play with light is like playing with magic and is best done
with a trained eye to recognize real and relative values, with experience and
knowledge of physical techniques.”

It is important to remember 3 key aspects Of Lighting if one wants to create a

successful balance in Architecture and Lighting.

(1) Aesthetic

(2) Function

(3) Efficiency
Aesthetic is where designers and architects focus on the emotional impact the
balance of lighting and architecture will have on occupants. It’s where designers
determine how they want people to feel when they walk around a space.

The second aspect, function, cannot be overlooked. We want the lighting to look a
certain way, but we have to also make sure it serves its most important purpose—
to help us see. Areas should be illuminated so occupants feel safe when navigating
a room or entire building. They should be able to see the floor and walls around
them, which should create a feeling of reassurance.

The final aspect is efficiency. To create a breathtaking lighting layout is one thing,
but to create a breathtaking layout that is also incredibly energy efficient is
another. It can be done by assuring the majority of the light is reaching its target so
that the amount of light wasted is less. This will make the building more efficient.

PURPOSE OF STUDY

Designing is the process of intellect and intuition as it is the product delivered at

the end of that process. It is exploratory and iterative. Some iterations lead to dead
ends or undesirable outcomes. Others lead to refining the design and moving
toward a beautiful solution to a problem.

Next, there is not a one-size-fits-all lighting design process. Some designs require
careful attention to technical aspects of the lighting system, some designs have
very strict illumination or energy consumption criteria, and other designs are
exclusively about creating an evocative mood, atmosphere, or environment.

To achieve a design’s goals, a thorough understanding of both the art of design and
the technology used to create and control light is required. The goal of every
design is to create, an environment that is appropriate to the use and the users feel
connected and it meets the requirements of efficiency of the project as well.
OBJECTIVE

The objective is to study the various effects of different types of lighting on

different spaces and materials, by studying about different types of lamps and
luminaries and their emission. To adapt and apply this integrated approach in the
evaluation of the building process, to suggest modifications and to explore new and
unique lighting design technologies appropriate for the lighting fixtures and how
various types of light can play a pivotal role in the design of any space.

METHODOLOGY

 To study about light and how it affects the form and space of a building.
 Studying about various types of lights in interiors and how it affects the aura
of any space.
 The proper distribution of light in a space according to the material used and
size of the space.
 Different types (i.e. indoor or outdoor) of lamps and luminaries their shapes,
sizes, emission, various types, energy they consume, etc.
 Use of day-lighting while designing or designing using daylight.
 Calculating how much light is required for a particular space or Building.
 How light affects vision and perception, and understand the interplay
between light and materials.
 To understand the lamp technologies, lighting hardware, and control systems
that will bring our vision of a project to fruition.
 Library study of similar dissertation to understand the amount of work
already done in this regard and also arrive at a framework of analysis of
future research.
 Collecting articles on Lighting Design or Designing with Light, studies on
different types of lights and luminaries, Natural Daylight etc. from Books,
magazines and publications.
 Online Study of the topic for latest available information.
