Using reporting verbs “say” and “tell”

“Say” and “tell” as reporting verbs are used in reported speech. Write these verbs after mentioning the
person who told you something. Follow the next examples:

Direct Speech Reported Speech

We are here. They told me that they were there.

I am listening to music. She said she was listening to music.

He planned our vacations. He told her he had planned their vacations.

Tip!
After told you need an object pronoun: He told he was… He told me he was …
After said don’t use an object pronoun: She said me she was.. She said she was ...

Using reporting verb “ask”
“Ask” as a reporting verb is used mainly in reported questions. Write this verb after mentioning the person who asked
you something. Follow the next examples:

Did he send the email? The teacher asked me if he had sent the email.

What are you reading? My mom asked me what I was reading.
