Aaron Copland

1900-1990

American composer (Russian-Jewish immigrant parents)

First American to study with Nadia Boulanger in France.

Wanted to compose music which was American in character.

In 1925, Jazz period for a few years – Music for Theatre – blues, ragtime.
In 1930, composed serious, highly dissonant music – Piano Variations – power,
percussive, intense.

Late 1930s, the Great Depression, - Billy the Kid (1938), Rodeo (1942),
Appalachian Spring (1944), A Lincoln Potrait (1942) – cowboy songs, folk
tunes, jazz, hymns

Texture of his music are clear and transparent.

Motion less harmonies to evoke openness of the American landscape.


Strongly tonal, polychords, polyrhythms, changing metres, percussive
orchestration.

After 1950, he used serial technique, tone row, to create own personal style.
